Harris Thanks Supporters for ‘Standing Up for Democracy’ at Annual DNC Meeting

Former Vice President Kamala Harris expressed gratitude to Democratic supporters at the Democratic National Committee’s annual winter meeting in Los Angeles on Friday, thanking them for “standing up for our democracy” and the “rule of law.”

Speaking to party members, Harris, who became the Democratic presidential nominee without a primary after President Joe Biden dropped out of the 2024 race, positioned herself as the “public face” of the party’s broader mission.

“People then come up to me in various places and when they thank me, they are thanking you for standing up for our democracy, for the rule of law, for values and principles, for community, for the breadth and depth of who we are with all our beautiful differences as a nation,” Harris said during her remarks.

The former vice president emphasized that gratitude directed toward her represents appreciation for all Democrats upholding foundational American principles. “When they thank me, they are thanking you for the work that you do that are about upholding basic principles that are at the foundation of the declaration of Independence and the Constitution of the United States.”

Harris’s appearance comes at a pivotal moment for her political future. Though she recently declined to pursue a 2026 gubernatorial campaign in California, she has left the door open for a potential 2028 presidential run. Her speech Friday provided glimpses into her long-term political vision.

“Obviously, we must focus on the midterms,” Harris stated, “But Democrats, we must also have a clear vision for what comes after the midterms. And then after Trump. We need to answer the question: what comes next for our party and our democracy?”

Harris addressed economic challenges facing many Americans, framing affordability as a critical issue. “We must be honest that for so many, the American dream has become more of a myth than a reality,” she said. “Whether it’s the cost of food, energy, health care, transportation or housing, America is facing an affordability crisis, a crisis that we are witnessing is fueling fear, frustration, and a lack of confidence in our systems.”

The former vice president highlighted recent Democratic victories in key local elections, suggesting they reflect voters’ priorities. “From Jackson to Atlanta, from Sacramento to New York. The American people sent a message they want leaders who fight yes for affordability, for health care, for the right of people to participate in their democracy,” Harris noted.

Her remarks also included direct criticism of President Donald Trump and his economic policies. Referencing Trump’s recent description of the economy as “a plus, plus, plus, plus, plus,” Harris countered, “There is nothing a plus about any of this.”

Harris extended her critique beyond Trump himself, contextualizing current political divisions within broader economic and social trends. “We must be candid and clear. Donald Trump is not the only source of our problems,” she said. “He and the rise of the MAGA movement, I believe, are a symptom of a failed system that is the result of years of outsourcing and offshoring, financial deregulation, growing income inequality, a broken campaign finance system and endless partisan gridlock all contributing to how we got here today.”

Her appearance at the DNC winter meeting represents Harris’s continuing efforts to maintain her prominence within the Democratic Party while articulating a vision for its future. As Democrats navigate the complex political landscape following their 2024 defeat, Harris appears to be positioning herself as a voice for party unity and democratic values.
