Harris Accuses Trump of Attempting to “Rig” Future Elections Following Virginia Court Ruling

Former Vice President Kamala Harris has sharply criticized President Donald Trump and Republicans after the Virginia Supreme Court invalidated a voter-approved redistricting referendum, claiming the ruling would “boost” efforts to manipulate upcoming elections.

“Today, the Virginia Supreme Court ignored the will of the people and overturned those democratically chosen maps,” Harris wrote on social media platform X on May 8. “This ruling gives a boost to Donald Trump’s effort to rig the 2026 elections and the Republicans’ long game to attack voting rights.”

The Virginia high court’s decision represents a significant victory for Republicans ahead of the 2026 midterm elections and has intensified the already heated national battle over redistricting and congressional control. The court ruled that the legislative process used to advance the redistricting proposal violated the state constitution.

“We hold that the legislative process employed to advance this proposal violated Article XII, Section 1 of the Constitution of Virginia,” the court stated in its decision. “This constitutional violation incurably taints the resulting referendum vote and nullifies its legal efficacy.”

The referendum, which passed narrowly with 51% of the vote, would have temporarily transferred redistricting authority from Virginia’s nonpartisan commission to the Democrat-controlled legislature through 2030. Political analysts projected it would have created a 10-1 Democratic advantage in Virginia’s congressional delegation, a significant shift from the current 6-5 edge Democrats hold.

Trump celebrated the court’s decision on his Truth Social platform, calling it a “Huge win for the Republican Party, and America, in Virginia.” His enthusiasm contrasted sharply with Democratic outrage over the ruling.

Democratic National Committee Chair Ken Martin condemned the decision, stating that “a group of unelected judges on the Virginia Supreme Court chose to put partisan politics over the will of the people.” Virginia Attorney General Jay Jones expressed similar sentiments, saying the ruling “silences the voices of the millions of Virginians who cast their ballots” and indicated his office is exploring “every legal pathway forward.”

The court battle in Virginia reflects broader redistricting conflicts nationwide as both parties jockey for advantage ahead of the crucial 2026 midterms. These congressional maps could significantly impact which party controls the House of Representatives after the next election cycle.

Harris echoed Democratic frustrations in her statement, adding, “We are rightfully outraged, but we will not give up. We must continue our fight to restore the power of the people.”

Her comments come as she has increasingly sharpened her criticism of Trump during recent public appearances while facing growing questions about her own political future. At a recent event in Las Vegas, Harris offered pointed critiques of both economic inequality and the former president.

“For far too many people in our country, the American dream is not real. And in fact, for many people in their lived experience, it’s what they would consider an American myth,” Harris said during the Las Vegas event.

When discussing Trump, she refused to minimize the threat she believes he poses: “I’m not going to dismiss him as being an idiot. He’s dangerous.”

Meanwhile, prominent Democrats have been noticeably hesitant to weigh in on whether Harris should lead the party ticket in 2028. When asked about her future, Rep. Jim Clyburn (D-S.C.) told reporters, “I have no idea,” while Rep. Dan Goldman (D-N.Y.) deflected by saying, “I have no idea who’s running, and we’ll focus on 2028 after 2026.”

Rep. John Larson (D-Conn.) suggested that while the decision ultimately rests with Harris, he believes Democrats should conduct “a wide-open Democratic primary” for the 2028 nomination.

Despite these uncertainties, Harris appears committed to remaining politically engaged. “I firmly and strongly believe that when you feel powerless, you are powerless. And when you feel powerful, you are powerful,” she said, urging supporters to demonstrate their political strength in the upcoming midterms.
