Immigration officials in Virginia have arrested a Guatemalan national who was released by local authorities despite facing multiple child pornography charges and having an active deportation detainer against him.
Roni Mendez-Escobar was taken into custody Wednesday by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents in Fairfax County, according to the Department of Homeland Security. The arrest comes after Mendez-Escobar was initially detained in October 2025 on 15 felony counts of possession of obscene material and two felony counts of possession of child pornography with intent to distribute.
Federal officials say Fairfax County authorities ignored an ICE detainer and released Mendez-Escobar days after his arrest without notifying immigration officials, despite the severity of the charges against him.
“This sicko has been charged with multiple counts of possession of child pornography and possession of child pornography with intent to distribute,” said DHS Acting Assistant Secretary Lauren Bis. “Despite these heinous crimes, sanctuary politicians in Fairfax County, Virginia, refused to honor ICE’s detainer and released a child predator from jail without notifying ICE.”
According to immigration records, Mendez-Escobar had been previously deported from the United States three times since 2015 before re-entering the country illegally for a fourth time. The date and location of his most recent entry remain unknown.
The case highlights escalating tensions between federal immigration authorities and so-called “sanctuary” jurisdictions that limit cooperation with ICE. Immigration policies in localities like Fairfax County have become increasingly contentious, with critics arguing they protect potentially dangerous individuals from deportation while supporters maintain they help build trust between immigrant communities and local law enforcement.
Fairfax County, a populous Northern Virginia suburb of Washington D.C., has recently garnered national attention following several high-profile crimes allegedly committed by undocumented immigrants. The region’s approach to immigration enforcement has drawn scrutiny from both federal officials and community members concerned about public safety.
Earlier this month, Misael Lopez Gomez, also a Guatemalan national without legal status, was arrested and charged with murder and felony child abuse after allegedly killing his three-month-old daughter. In March, authorities charged Anibal Armando Chavarria Muy, another Guatemalan citizen, with second-degree murder following a fatal stabbing.
Another case drawing attention involves Abdul Jalloh, an undocumented immigrant from Sierra Leone with a reported history of more than 30 arrests, who was charged with murder after allegedly fatally stabbing a woman at a bus stop. This week, 18-year-old Israel Flores Ortiz received a 360-day jail sentence for groping multiple female classmates in hallways at Fairfax High School.
The string of incidents has intensified debate over immigration enforcement policies in Virginia and nationwide. Law enforcement agencies remain divided over the appropriate balance between local policing priorities and federal immigration enforcement.
ICE officials maintain that detainers are crucial tools for removing potentially dangerous individuals who are in the country illegally, particularly those charged with serious crimes. The agency argues that when local jurisdictions decline to honor these requests, public safety may be compromised.
Advocates for immigrant communities counter that entangling local law enforcement with federal immigration duties can discourage crime reporting and cooperation from vulnerable populations. They argue this ultimately makes communities less safe overall.
As Mendez-Escobar now faces both the criminal charges and potential deportation proceedings, his case adds to the ongoing national conversation about immigration enforcement priorities, public safety concerns, and the complex relationship between local, state, and federal authorities in addressing these issues.
