Franklin Graham Defends Trump in Image Controversy After Jesus Christ Comparison

Rev. Franklin Graham issued a statement Thursday defending former President Donald Trump against criticism over an AI-generated image that some viewers interpreted as depicting Trump as Jesus Christ. The statement, which Trump shared on Truth Social, represents the latest development in a controversy that has stirred debate among both Trump’s supporters and critics.

“I do not believe President Trump would knowingly depict himself as Jesus Christ—that would certainly be inappropriate,” Graham wrote in his statement. According to Graham, Trump believed the image showed “a doctor helping someone” and promptly removed the post after concerns were raised.

The evangelical leader elaborated on why he felt the criticism was overblown: “There were no spiritual references—no halo, there were no crosses, no angels. It was a flag, soldiers, a nurse, fighter planes, eagles… I think this is a lot to do about nothing.”

The controversy erupted Sunday night when Trump posted the AI-generated image showing himself appearing to heal a man while surrounded by patriotic imagery. Critics quickly condemned what they viewed as sacrilegious imagery, with Trump addressing the backlash the following day.

“I did post it, and I thought it was me as a doctor… only the fake news could come up with that one,” Trump said at the time. “It’s supposed to be me as a doctor, making people better.” The post was subsequently deleted from his Truth Social account.

Graham also referenced another image Trump shared that showed Jesus standing beside him with a hand on his shoulder. Graham interpreted this positively, saying, “I like the fact that this is a picture of Jesus whispering in his ear or at least His hand on his shoulder, guiding him. We all need that—we all need to be listening to Jesus.”

The backlash to the original post came from unexpected quarters, including some of Trump’s own supporters. OutKick contributor Riley Gaines questioned the post, while RedState writer Bonchie described the image as “blasphemy” and urged Trump to apologize. Social media influencer Brilyn Hollyhand added that “faith is not a prop.”

Media figures and political opponents also weighed in, with Cenk Uygur calling it “blasphemous” and NBC’s Richard Engel publicly questioning whether Trump was joking.

This incident occurs amid Trump’s ongoing public dispute with Pope Leo XIV, whom he recently criticized as “weak on crime” and “terrible for foreign policy.” The Pope responded by stating he was “unafraid” of the Trump administration.

Despite these tensions, Graham expressed hope for reconciliation between Trump and the pontiff. “I would hope that the President and Pope Leo can meet at some point, and that the Pope would have the opportunity to thank President Trump for his efforts to protect religious liberty,” Graham said in his statement.

Graham, who serves as president and CEO of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association, has been a longtime supporter of Trump. He spoke at the 2024 Republican National Convention in Milwaukee and has frequently defended the former president’s policies, particularly regarding religious freedom issues.

A representative for Graham told Fox News Digital that the reverend would be appearing on Fox News’ “Hannity” Thursday night but had no further comment on the matter.

The White House has not yet responded to requests for comment regarding Graham’s defense of the former president.
