Minnesota Governor Tim Walz Eyes Return to Teaching as Political Career Shifts

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, who recently abandoned his quest for a third term in office, is contemplating a return to his roots as an educator after his current term ends.

“What I’m really good at is, I’m a really good geography teacher,” Walz said with a laugh during a press conference Tuesday. “I think that’s something where I would find the joy in, getting back in there, trying to teach.”

Before entering politics, Walz built his career as a teacher and football coach at Mankato West High School in southern Minnesota, experience that helped shape his approachable, folksy public persona that later became a political asset.

Walz’s political trajectory took a dramatic turn in 2024 when Vice President Kamala Harris selected him as her running mate in her presidential bid. Though the Harris-Walz ticket ultimately lost to Donald Trump, the national exposure positioned Walz as a rising Democratic Party star with potential presidential aspirations for 2028.

However, his decision to bow out of Minnesota’s gubernatorial race comes amid mounting criticism over his administration’s handling of significant fraud in government programs. The scandal has tarnished his reputation as an effective administrator and raised questions about his political future.

During Tuesday’s press conference, Walz expressed concerns about the challenges Minnesota faces with the incoming Trump administration, anticipating federal interventions in state affairs.

“Look, I got a year of work to do here. I think it will be the most challenging year, and that includes probably COVID,” he said, referring to his leadership during the pandemic. “I caution Minnesotans, this is going to get worse before it gets better.”

Walz’s legacy as governor includes significant progressive achievements during the rare period when Democrats held full control of Minnesota’s state government. His administration successfully implemented policies including a paid family and medical leave program launching January 1, the elimination of nearly all abortion restrictions, protections for gender-affirming care for transgender youth, marijuana legalization, universal free school meals for students, and enhanced gun safety measures.

Political analysts offer mixed assessments of Walz’s future prospects. Dan Hofrenning, a political scientist at St. Olaf College, suggests this may mark the end of Walz’s career in elected office.

“One never says never on political futures, but two-term governor, vice presidential candidate, that’s a pretty good run,” Hofrenning noted. “And at the end of that run, pulling out of the race is a recognition that he had some strong political vulnerabilities.”

Hofrenning suggested Walz could transition into an “elder statesman role” within the Democratic Party, potentially serving as a cabinet secretary or ambassador should Democrats reclaim the White House in 2028.

However, University of Minnesota political scientist Larry Jacobs sees potential for Walz to reemerge politically after some time away from the spotlight.

“After you pull out like this, it’s easy to say ‘no future’ because he’s going out on a downer, and it looks like he has his tail between his legs, but I think that might be shortsighted,” Jacobs said. “There could be a spot in a year or two when this has blown over a bit and he’s got an opportunity, perhaps, to run for U.S. Senate.”

Jacobs expressed skepticism about Walz’s chances for a cabinet position, noting that “his stay in the national scene as a VP candidate didn’t leave him in high standing. There’s a real perception of him as kind of out of his league.”

Financial considerations may also influence Walz’s next steps. With an annual gubernatorial salary of approximately $127,000 and a net worth estimated between $800,000 and just over $1 million according to various financial analyses, Walz faces practical employment considerations after leaving office.

“He’s going to need employment. Maybe he finds himself a new niche, maybe in the foundation world,” Jacobs observed. “But I don’t think this is a guy who’s going to retire in the near future.”

For now, Walz seems focused on both immediate challenges facing Minnesota and some personal goals, including running marathons and defending his age-division title in a Thanksgiving “Turkey Trot” race – perhaps finding balance as his political chapter begins to close.
