Republican House Majority Narrows as Congressman Doug LaMalfa Dies at 65
The sudden death of Rep. Doug LaMalfa has sent shockwaves through Congress and further constricted the already razor-thin Republican majority in the House of Representatives. The California congressman died this week at age 65 during emergency surgery for an aortic aneurysm, becoming the seventh House member to die since April 2024 and the first Republican among them.
“It really shook us,” said House Speaker Mike Johnson of LaMalfa’s unexpected passing. Rep. Tom McClintock, whose northern California district borders LaMalfa’s, called him “the kindest man I ever knew” – not one of the kindest, but the kindest, Johnson emphasized when addressing the loss.
The timing could not be more precarious for Republicans, whose grip on power has been tenuous for months. LaMalfa’s death, combined with Monday’s resignation of Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia, has shrunk the GOP margin to 218-213, with four vacancies in the 435-member chamber.
The mathematics of House control has become increasingly delicate. With their current numbers, Republicans can only afford to lose a single vote on any partisan measure. Losing two votes would result in a 216-216 tie, which under House rules means defeat.
“We are one flu season away from losing the majority,” warned Rep. Tim Burchett, R-Tenn., highlighting the vulnerability of the Republican position. His comment carries particular weight given the CDC’s recent announcement that the U.S. is experiencing its worst flu season since 1997-98, with a new variant just identified.
This precarious majority will face another test when either Christian Menefee or Amanda Edwards wins a special election later this month to succeed the late Rep. Sylvester Turner, D-Texas, who died in March after only two months in office. That result will further tighten the margin to 218-214.
Adding to Republican concerns, 80-year-old Rep. Jim Baird, R-Ind., is currently hospitalized following a car accident. Though he’s reported to be fine, he’s unavailable for votes this week, further illustrating how even temporary absences can affect the party’s ability to pass legislation.
Despite these challenges, Speaker Johnson remains philosophical. “We’ve been working with a razor-thin majority since I became speaker. And, as you know, at many points in the last year, we had a one- or two-vote majority at any given moment,” he said. “But this is the group that has demonstrated over and over and over and over that we defy expectations and make history.”
When asked about the potential for losing control, Johnson responded with characteristic optimism: “None of us are guaranteed tomorrow. None of us. We don’t know what’s going to happen. The Bible says you don’t worry about tomorrow. You focus on today. I’m not worried about the numbers. I don’t get up in apprehension or anxiety in any day. I get up every day with hope.”
While the situation appears dire for Republicans, historical precedent suggests an actual flip in House control mid-session remains unlikely. Unlike the Senate, the Constitution prohibits governors from appointing House members – vacancies must be filled through special elections, which typically take months to organize.
Several upcoming special elections will determine how the numbers evolve. Georgia will hold an election on March 10 to fill Greene’s seat, and California will likely schedule one in the spring or summer for LaMalfa’s position. New Jersey will also hold a special election to complete the term of Democratic Governor-elect Mikie Sherrill, who resigned from the House last year.
Despite the partisan implications, LaMalfa’s death has prompted bipartisan mourning. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., who entered Congress alongside LaMalfa in 2012, called him a “great member of Congress” and led Democrats in a moment of silence during a forum about the January 6 Capitol riot.
As both parties navigate this shifting landscape, the fragility of the Republican majority serves as a reminder of life’s uncertainty – a sentiment that legendary Dodgers broadcaster Vin Scully once captured perfectly when commenting on an injured player listed as “day-to-day.”
“Aren’t we all?” Scully had mused. In politics, as in life, nothing is guaranteed.
