Minneapolis Grapples with Massive Fraud Scandal as GOP Lawmakers Point to Walz
MINNEAPOLIS, MN – Minneapolis continues to reel from the fallout of a fraud scandal that could exceed $1 billion in misappropriated taxpayer funds, with Republican lawmakers in the state placing much of the blame on Governor Tim Walz’s administration.
“I would say the number one culprit in the fraud going on here in Minnesota is our executive,” State Senator Julia Coleman told Fox News Digital. Coleman, who represents Carver County in southwest Minneapolis, added, “Governor Tim Walz is in charge of making sure that the taxpayers’ dollars are protected.”
The sprawling fraud scheme, which dates back to at least 2020, has infiltrated multiple state departments and nonprofits across various sectors including childcare services, COVID-19 relief programs, and autism care services. The scandal has drawn national attention as investigations reveal the extent of the misappropriated state and federal funds.
“He had years to stop this,” Coleman said of Walz, suggesting the governor “only seems to care now that it’s getting national attention.”
State Representative Mark Koran, who represents Minnesota’s District 28, described the fraud as “almost incomprehensible” in its scope. “You have to look at who’s been solely in charge of that process, which has been Governor Walz,” Koran stated. “The executive body controls every agency. And I think what to understand is how they are either extraordinarily incompetent or willfully complicit. There are no alternatives to it. And I think they’re actually both.”
The most prominent case within the broader scandal involves the Feeding Our Future program, a federally funded initiative administered by the Minnesota Department of Education. Prosecutors allege the scheme exploited the children’s nutrition program during the COVID-19 pandemic by diverting funds intended for meals for low-income children. This particular case now stands as the nation’s largest COVID-19 fraud case.
State Senator Michael Kreun, representing the 32nd District in Anoka County, described the situation as an “epidemic of fraud” that has made Minnesota “the epicenter of fraud in the United States.” Kreun noted that Republican legislators have been working on anti-fraud measures, particularly over the last year, but claimed “Governor Walz has been fighting us in those efforts.”
Kreun also pointed to Attorney General Keith Ellison, saying he “has also been very negligent in his handling of the fraud.” The senator suggested that Minnesota’s social services programs were set up under an “honor system” with few guardrails, creating vulnerabilities that fraudsters eventually exploited.
“Once the fraudsters realized how to exploit these programs, the administration, the Walz administration, hasn’t done really anything to put safeguards in place to prevent the fraud that was developing over a number of years,” Kreun added.
While Republican legislators plan to implement more oversight during the next legislative session, Koran emphasized a significant challenge: the legislature “doesn’t have any oversight in the execution and operations of these agencies.”
“The governor has had sole responsibility since the day he’s arrived,” Koran said. “He entered into a fraudulent environment. He’s enhanced the fraudulent environment, and he’s not done a single thing to stop that fraud.”
A spokesperson from Walz’s office defended the governor’s actions, stating that Walz “views addressing fraud as a top priority” and has made “systematic changes to state government” over the past three years. The spokesperson acknowledged that detecting fraud is “resource intensive and time-consuming,” particularly in federal Medicaid programs that involve complex interactions between federal, state, and county governments and private insurance companies.
“That is why we have created additional checks and balances throughout state government,” the spokesperson said, citing the hiring of investigators, auditors, and law enforcement personnel. The governor has also brought in an outside firm to audit payments to high-risk programs at the Department of Human Services and created a specialized fraud-fighting law enforcement unit at the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension.
“He has installed new leadership at DHS with a single-minded focus on stopping fraudulent payments,” the spokesperson continued. “Many of the changes have not been flashy or headline-grabbing, but rather just the hard work of building stronger safeguards throughout state government.”
The scandal continues to unfold as investigations proceed, leaving Minnesota residents concerned about the misuse of public funds and the effectiveness of government oversight.

Fraud in government programs is always concerning, but these issues often have deep-rooted systemic causes. I hope the investigation looks beyond just blaming officials and instead identifies ways to strengthen program integrity and accountability across the board.
Agreed, a holistic approach is needed to address the underlying vulnerabilities. Knee-jerk political reactions rarely lead to sustainable solutions.
It’s troubling to see such a massive fraud scheme targeting government programs meant to help people. I hope the investigation focuses on how to improve controls and oversight, rather than just assigning blame. Taxpayers deserve to know their money is being used responsibly.
This is a serious fraud case that deserves thorough investigation. Taxpayer funds should be protected, but the blame game between politicians rarely helps resolve such complex issues. An impartial analysis of the failures and recommendations for improved oversight would be more constructive.
Agreed, the priority should be uncovering the full scope of the fraud and implementing measures to prevent future misuse of public funds. Pointing fingers may score political points, but it doesn’t fix the problem.

While the scale of this fraud is alarming, it’s not uncommon for complex government programs to be vulnerable to abuse. The focus should be on improving oversight and internal controls to detect and prevent such schemes in the future, rather than political finger-pointing.
