TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Florida’s 2026 gubernatorial race is heating up as a new Republican contender has entered the field, setting up what could become a proxy battle between different factions of the GOP in the nation’s third most populous state.

James Fishback, a 30-year-old investor from Florida’s rural Panhandle region, formally announced his candidacy on Monday, immediately positioning himself as an alternative to Rep. Byron Donalds, who currently enjoys former President Donald Trump’s endorsement.

In his announcement video, Fishback wasted no time criticizing Donalds’ congressional record while aligning himself with the policy positions of term-limited Gov. Ron DeSantis, who has maintained a complicated relationship with Trump since challenging him for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination.

“Florida is our home, America is our birthright, and we will never let them steal it from us,” Fishback declared in his campaign launch.

The emerging contest highlights ongoing tensions within the Republican Party, particularly in Florida, where DeSantis has cultivated his own brand of conservatism that sometimes aligns with, but remains distinct from, Trump’s approach. DeSantis cannot seek reelection in 2026 due to term limits.

Fishback’s platform mirrors several DeSantis priorities, including a pledge to eliminate property taxes and targeting H-1B visas, which allow American companies to bring in workers with specialized skills that are purportedly difficult to find domestically. These policy positions suggest he may be attempting to position himself as the governor’s ideological heir.

The newcomer’s announcement also contained messaging focused on immigration and references to defending Florida’s historical past. In one notable segment of his announcement video, Fishback declared, “I’m a proud American who will never apologize for our history,” followed by footage of a monument honoring Confederate soldiers in Jackson County, Florida.

Political analysts note that such messaging appears designed to appeal to the Republican base in a state where cultural and identity issues have become increasingly central to political campaigns. If elected, Donalds would become Florida’s first Black governor, adding a demographic dimension to the contest.

The Donalds campaign responded swiftly to Fishback’s announcement, dismissing the challenger and emphasizing the congressman’s Trump endorsement.

“Byron Donalds will be Florida’s next governor because he is the proven conservative fighter endorsed by President Trump,” said Ryan Smith, chief strategist for Donalds’ campaign. “Anyone running against him is an anti-Trump RINO and will get crushed in the Republican primary.”

The race comes as Florida has shifted from a traditional swing state to increasingly solid Republican territory. The GOP now controls the governor’s mansion, both U.S. Senate seats, the state legislature, and most statewide offices. This political transformation has made the Republican primary increasingly decisive in determining who ultimately governs the state.

Political observers suggest the emerging contest may reveal much about the future direction of the Republican Party in Florida and potentially nationwide. The race could test whether Trump’s endorsement remains the decisive factor in Republican primaries, or if candidates aligned with DeSantis’ governing approach can forge an independent path to victory.
