Clintons Face Congressional Subpoenas in Epstein Investigation
House Oversight Committee Chairman Rep. James Comer has issued a stern warning to former President Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, demanding they comply with subpoenas requiring in-person depositions regarding their connections to convicted sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein.
The Kentucky Republican first ordered the Clintons to appear before the committee in August. However, the couple’s attorney, David Kendall, recently proposed that his clients provide written answers instead, calling it “the most efficient and equitable way to proceed.”
Comer rejected this suggestion outright. “Given their history with Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell, any attempt by the Clintons to avoid sitting for a deposition would be in defiance of lawful subpoenas and grounds to initiate contempt of Congress proceedings,” he stated on Friday in a letter to Kendall.
The committee has scheduled Bill Clinton’s deposition for December 17, with Hillary Clinton’s to follow on December 18. Comer emphasized that further delays would constitute defying a lawful subpoena.
In his November 3 letter, Kendall argued that the Clintons had minimal relevant information to provide. “The public’s demand for transparency from its government about their criminality is both understandable and warranted,” Kendall wrote. “Former President Clinton and former Secretary Clinton welcome legitimate oversight in this matter that is grounded in fact. In that regard, former President Bill Clinton and former Secretary Hillary Clinton have little to contribute to that legitimate goal, all of which can be readily submitted on paper.”
Bill Clinton has acknowledged traveling on Epstein’s private jet but has consistently denied ever visiting Epstein’s Caribbean island. In his 2024 memoir “Citizen,” the former president expressed regret about his association with Epstein, writing that he wished he had never met the disgraced financier. Notably, Clinton has not been accused of any wrongdoing in connection with Epstein.
The congressional investigation runs parallel to broader federal efforts to uncover the full scope of Epstein’s criminal network. President Donald Trump recently signed The Epstein Files Transparency Act, which mandates that the Justice Department release all unclassified records and investigative materials related to Epstein and Maxwell.
This legislation requires the DOJ to disclose files pertaining to individuals referenced in Epstein’s legal cases, details of trafficking allegations, internal DOJ communications about Epstein, and information surrounding the investigation into his death while in federal custody.
The push for transparency intensified after Democrats released three emails from Epstein’s estate that mentioned Trump. In response, Republicans released over 20,000 pages of Epstein documents. These materials, while authentic, contain unverified statements from Epstein and do not allege any wrongdoing by Trump.
Bill Clinton also appears in some of the newly unearthed documents. In a 2015 email, Epstein claimed that Clinton “NEVER EVER” visited his private island, a statement that aligns with the former president’s consistent denials.
The Epstein case continues to be politically charged, with both parties seeking to implicate high-profile figures from the opposing side. The investigation has taken on new urgency as lawmakers respond to public demands for accountability regarding Epstein’s powerful connections.
Epstein, who died in federal custody in 2019 while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges, maintained relationships with numerous prominent individuals from business, politics, and entertainment. His former associate Ghislaine Maxwell is currently serving a 20-year prison sentence after being convicted of facilitating the sexual abuse of minors.
The Clinton Foundation has not responded to requests for comment regarding the congressional subpoenas or the scheduled depositions.
