U.S. Attorney Announces Dramatic Crime Reduction in D.C. Following Federal Law Enforcement Surge
U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia Jeanine Pirro announced Tuesday that Washington D.C. is experiencing unprecedented levels of criminal prosecution under President Donald Trump’s enhanced federal law enforcement initiative.
“We are prosecuting crime in the District like never before with real consequences, real cases, real accountability,” Pirro declared. “And for the first time in years, violent offenders are being prosecuted aggressively instead of being released back onto the streets.”
According to the U.S. Marshals Service, the Operation Make D.C. Safe & Beautiful Task Force has arrested more than 8,152 violent fugitives as of December 31. These arrests include 20 individuals wanted for homicide, 1,343 for narcotics offenses, 633 for weapons violations, 29 for sex crimes, and 48 known gang members.
Pirro highlighted the tangible impact of the operation, noting that authorities have made a total of 8,406 arrests and removed 856 firearms from circulation. “This prevents them from being used in a homicide or an assault with a deadly weapon, or any other kind of crime,” she emphasized.
The initiative has yielded significant statistical improvements in crime rates across the capital. “Since the enhanced federal partnership and the surge, homicide is down 60% and robbery is down 49%. Carjackings are down 68%,” Pirro reported. “Overall crime [is] down 32%.”
The dramatic shift in prosecution rates marks a stark departure from previous approaches to criminal justice in the District. Pirro pointed out that “fewer than 10% of the cases go unprosecuted, compared to almost 70% of the cases that went unprosecuted in the last administration.”
The task force operation began in early August under President Trump’s directive, with U.S. Marshals Service Director Gadyaces Serralta coordinating more than 3,100 personnel from 28 different agencies. This massive deployment of federal resources stems from Trump’s March 28 executive order establishing the D.C. Safe and Beautiful Task Force.
In that executive order, Trump articulated a comprehensive vision for the nation’s capital: “It is the policy of the United States to make the District of Columbia safe, beautiful, and prosperous by preventing crime, punishing criminals, preserving order, protecting our revered American monuments, and promoting beautification and the preservation of our history and heritage.”
The initiative represents a significant federal intervention in local law enforcement matters. Trump’s executive order specifically emphasized that “America’s capital must be a place in which residents, commuters, and tourists feel safe at all hours, including on public transit. Its highways, boulevards, and parks should be clean, well-kept, and pleasant.”
During her remarks, Pirro expressed gratitude to President Trump for what she described as his “unwavering commitment to law and order.” She credited the administration’s deployment of “additional agents, advanced tools, and a no-nonsense mandate” as being “transformative for the people in the District.”
“Under his leadership, we have seen a renewed focus on cracking down on violent offenders, dismantling criminal networks and restoring safety to our streets,” Pirro added. “This isn’t just rhetoric, it is reality, and it is real action that has delivered tangible results for the people of the District.”
The operation represents one of the most aggressive federal law enforcement interventions in the District of Columbia in recent years. As 2026 begins, the administration appears poised to continue this approach, with Pirro characterizing 2025 as “a remarkable progress” and “a turning point in the fight against crime here in the nation’s capital.”

Removing dangerous weapons from the streets can certainly help reduce violent crime. At the same time, I wonder about the broader context and whether this approach addresses the root causes effectively.
Increased prosecution rates can be a double-edged sword. It’s important to ensure that the justice system is fair, impartial, and focused on rehabilitation and crime prevention, not just harsh punishments.
The data on increased prosecutions and arrests is thought-provoking. I’d be interested to learn more about how this initiative has affected community relations and perceptions of law enforcement.
While the statistics seem impressive, it’s crucial that any enforcement efforts respect civil liberties and avoid disproportionately impacting vulnerable populations. Balancing public safety and justice is a complex challenge.
The emphasis on real accountability for violent offenders is encouraging, but I hope the focus remains balanced and that there are checks in place to prevent overreach. Public safety is crucial, but so are due process and human rights.
It’s good to see proactive steps being taken to combat crime and improve public safety in D.C. However, the long-term impacts and potential unintended consequences would be important to monitor closely.
Interesting to see the data on increased prosecution rates in D.C. It’s important to have effective law enforcement while still respecting civil liberties. I wonder what factors contributed to the rise and how sustainable it will be long-term.
The statistics on the number of violent fugitives arrested and firearms removed from circulation sound impactful. I’d be curious to learn more about the specific strategies and tactics used in this operation.
The removal of firearms from circulation is a significant achievement, but I wonder about the long-term sustainability of this approach and whether it addresses the root causes of violence effectively.
This data raises important questions about the balance between law enforcement and community relations. Effective crime reduction strategies should prioritize public trust and collaboration with local stakeholders.
