Former U.S. Senator Doug Jones Announces Alabama Gubernatorial Bid for 2026

Former U.S. Sen. Doug Jones announced his candidacy for Alabama governor on Monday, potentially setting up a rematch with current U.S. Senator Tommy Tuberville, who defeated him in 2020 and is also seeking the governor’s office.

Jones, a Democrat who briefly broke Alabama’s Republican stronghold with his 2017 Senate victory, filed his campaign paperwork with the Secretary of State’s Office before making his announcement through a campaign video on social media.

“I am running for governor of Alabama,” Jones stated in the video. “Folks in Alabama deserve a governor who is going to fight for them.” He plans to hold an official campaign kickoff event next month.

In his announcement, Jones appeared to take aim at Tuberville’s residency status, which became a point of contention during their 2020 Senate race. “Alabama wants their next governor to be someone who lives here, who works here, who listens to the people of this state,” Jones said, adding that Alabamians want a governor “who treats this state with grace and dignity and not just like a rest stop on the way to the Florida beach.”

Tuberville, a former football coach whose opponents have nicknamed him “Florida man,” owns a $270,000 home in Auburn, Alabama, where he claims a homestead exemption, along with a $4 million beach house in Walton County, Florida.

Jones highlighted economic concerns in his campaign statement, noting that Alabamians “struggle with the cost of the most basic stuff in life — food, housing, and health care.” He emphasized the growing gap between living costs and income in both rural communities and cities across the state, promising to deliver “real relief and economic opportunity.”

The former senator has been building momentum for weeks, working to promote Democratic candidates and causes throughout Alabama before officially entering the race. Jones, a lawyer and former U.S. attorney, gained national recognition for prosecuting two Ku Klux Klansmen responsible for Birmingham’s 1963 church bombing that killed four young girls.

His 2017 Senate victory came in a special election to fill the seat previously held by Jeff Sessions, where he defeated Republican Roy Moore, who faced sexual misconduct allegations. However, Jones lost his 2020 reelection bid to Tuberville by a substantial margin — Tuberville received more than 1.3 million votes to Jones’ 920,478.

The Tuberville campaign responded dismissively to Jones’ announcement. “Last time Doug Jones ran against Coach Tuberville, it didn’t go well for Doug,” said Mallory Jaspers, a Tuberville campaign spokeswoman. She added that Tuberville “has spent the past six months building coalitions across the state, securing endorsements from every key player in Alabama politics, and shattering fundraising records.”

Political analysts consider Alabama a Republican stronghold, with the Cook Political Report rating the upcoming gubernatorial race as “solid Republican.” The GOP has controlled the Alabama governor’s office for over two decades, with former Gov. Don Siegelman being the last Democrat to hold the position before losing a close race in 2002.

Despite these challenges, Kevin Donohoe, a spokesman for the Democratic Governors Association, expressed optimism, pointing to Democratic wins in other traditionally Republican states like Kentucky, Kansas, and North Carolina.

“With health care costs rising, schools failing and not enough good-paying jobs, Alabama families are hurting — but Tommy Tuberville would only make things worse,” Donohoe said. “Alabama deserves new leadership that will get results, and there’s an opportunity for a Democrat who fits the state well to make this race competitive.”

Both candidates will face party primaries in May 2026 before the general election in November.
