White House Border Czar Clashes with Heckler at University Event in El Paso

White House border czar Tom Homan engaged in a heated exchange with a protestor who called him a “racist” during a speaking engagement at the University of Texas at El Paso on Thursday. The confrontation occurred at an event hosted by Turning Point USA, where Homan was discussing immigration enforcement operations.

When an attendee shouted “racist” and “traitor” at him during his presentation, Homan responded defiantly. “Call me what you want, I don’t care,” he said, before adding, “Why don’t you grow a backbone, put a Kevlar vest and a gun on your hip and go secure this border?”

The tension escalated later in the event during a question-and-answer session when the same protestor made allegations connecting Homan’s rhetoric to the 2019 El Paso Walmart mass shooting. The attendee suggested that Patrick Crusius, the perpetrator who killed 23 people and wounded 22 others, was influenced by beliefs allegedly shared by Homan.

“Patrick Crusius, your everyday conservative, drove hundreds of miles to our city based on your belief that Hispanics are replacing the white race of white people and we need a scare to deter Hispanics from coming into the country,” the protestor claimed. He further alleged that the Great Replacement Theory – a far-right belief that claims there is a plot to replace white populations with non-white immigrants – has become “a mainstream conservative narrative” that has been “fully integrated into mainstream media.”

Homan defended himself by clarifying his position. “To be honest, what I said was the open border was an action, was a mess, and it was by design,” he responded. While Homan has previously suggested that the Biden administration intentionally left the southern border unsecured to create a new voting bloc favoring Democrats, he acknowledged during a congressional hearing that he lacks concrete evidence to support this claim.

The El Paso shooting referenced by the protestor was one of the deadliest attacks targeting Latinos in modern U.S. history. Crusius drove approximately 650 miles from Allen, Texas, to El Paso to carry out the attack in August 2019. His manifesto contained white nationalist and anti-immigrant themes, specifically citing the Great Replacement Theory as part of his motivation.

Earlier this year, Crusius was sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole after pleading guilty to state charges related to the shooting. In 2023, he also pleaded guilty to 90 federal murder and hate crime charges, resulting in 90 consecutive life sentences.

The confrontation in El Paso highlights the ongoing tensions surrounding immigration policy in the United States, particularly in border communities that have been directly affected by both immigration issues and extremist violence. El Paso, situated directly across from Ciudad Juárez, Mexico, remains at the center of national debates over border security, immigration enforcement, and the rhetoric used to discuss these issues.

This incident occurs as the Biden administration continues to face criticism from both sides of the political spectrum regarding its border policies. Homan, who previously served as acting director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) during the Trump administration, was appointed as border czar earlier this year to address what many have described as a crisis at the southern border.
