In a significant shift in Texas politics, former House Representative Colin Allred announced Monday that he is ending his campaign for the U.S. Senate, citing concerns that a contentious Democratic primary could undermine party unity ahead of a crucial election cycle.

“I’ve come to believe that a bruising Senate Democratic primary and runoff would prevent the Democratic Party from going into this critical election unified against the danger posed to our communities and our Constitution by Donald Trump and one of his Republican bootlickers,” Allred said in a statement.

Allred’s withdrawal comes amid reports that progressive Representative Jasmine Crockett is expected to enter the race, with an announcement anticipated Monday afternoon. The Dallas Morning News first reported Sunday that Crockett would launch a Senate bid after facing difficult decisions about her own political future following Republican-led redistricting in Texas.

The filing deadline for Texas candidates ends Monday evening, creating a tense timeline for political maneuvering across the state.

Instead of pursuing a Senate seat, Allred announced he will run in the newly redrawn 33rd Congressional District, currently represented by Democratic Representative Marc Veasey under previous boundaries. The district has been significantly reconfigured, now encompassing more of Dallas County while reducing its footprint in Tarrant County.

“The 33rd district was racially gerrymandered by Trump in an effort to further rig our democracy but it’s also the community where I grew up attending public schools and watching my mom struggle to pay for our groceries,” Allred explained in his statement.

Allred’s decision reshapes both the Senate and House races in Texas. He is expected to face a primary challenge from Representative Julie Johnson, who is switching districts to run in the redrawn 33rd. Meanwhile, Veasey’s political plans remain unclear.

The former NFL linebacker-turned-civil rights attorney has a notable political track record. First elected to the House in 2018 when he flipped a Republican-held seat, Allred successfully won re-election in his Dallas-area district in both 2020 and 2022. His 2024 Senate bid against Republican incumbent Ted Cruz ended in defeat, with Cruz winning by eight points in one of the nation’s most expensive Senate races.

Allred’s second Senate campaign, launched in July, was quickly complicated when state lawmaker James Talarico entered the Democratic primary in September. Talarico has built a growing national profile within progressive circles.

Crockett, currently in her second term as a U.S. House member, has established herself as a progressive firebrand, particularly through her performance on the House Oversight Committee and her strong presence on social media. Her outspoken style has earned her prominence within the Democratic Party, securing her a speaking slot at the 2024 Democratic National Convention despite being a first-term representative at the time.

Earlier this year, Crockett ran for ranking member of the House Oversight Committee following the death of Representative Gerry Connolly but withdrew after failing to secure leadership backing within the party.

The Texas Senate race has become a focal point in national politics, with Republicans fielding a high-profile three-way primary between incumbent Senator John Cornyn and challengers including state Attorney General Ken Paxton and Representative Wesley Hunt.

These political maneuvers are taking place against the backdrop of controversial redistricting in Texas, which has been criticized by Democrats as partisan gerrymandering. Governor Greg Abbott recently signed a new redistricting map into law, which Republicans view as a major victory ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.

The Department of Justice has become involved in legal challenges to the Republican-drawn maps, highlighting the significance of the redistricting battle in a state that continues to be a critical battleground despite its historically Republican lean in statewide races.
