Former GOP Senator Jon Kyl Announces Withdrawal from Public Life After Dementia Diagnosis

Former Republican Sen. Jon Kyl, one of Arizona’s most prominent political figures, announced Tuesday that he is withdrawing from public life following a diagnosis of dementia. The 83-year-old lawmaker served nearly three decades in Congress, building a reputation as a respected conservative voice and rising to the position of Senate minority whip.

“I was blessed to represent the people of Arizona in Congress and to have numerous other opportunities to contribute to the political and civic life of our nation and state,” Kyl stated. “However, the time has come for me to withdraw from public life. I have been diagnosed with a neurological disease manifesting as dementia.”

Kyl’s political career began in the House of Representatives, where he represented Arizona’s 4th Congressional District from 1987 to 1995. He then moved to the Senate, serving from 1995 until his retirement in 2013. His influence in Arizona politics remained significant even after leaving office.

Following his initial Senate retirement, Kyl joined the lobbying firm Covington and Burling, where he leveraged his legislative expertise and connections. His experience and reputation led then-Governor Doug Ducey to appoint him in 2018 to temporarily fill the Senate seat left vacant by the death of John McCain. After several months in this caretaker role, Kyl returned to private practice.

During his time in Washington, Kyl earned recognition for his work on water policy, a critical issue in the arid Southwest, as well as his contributions to national defense and intelligence matters. He also played a significant role in the confirmation process of Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh, helping to shepherd the nomination through a contentious Senate approval process.

Kyl’s connection to Arizona began when he arrived as an 18-year-old freshman at the University of Arizona, where he would meet his future wife. The university acknowledged his contributions in a statement, saying, “His leadership, integrity, and commitment to service reflect the highest ideals of public life.”

Despite the difficult diagnosis, Kyl expressed gratitude in his announcement. “My family and I now head down a path filled with moments of joy and increasing difficulties,” he stated. “I am grateful beyond expression for their love and support, in these coming days as in all the days of my life.”

The announcement comes at a time when public awareness of dementia and other neurological conditions is growing. According to the Alzheimer’s Association, approximately 7 million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s, the most common form of dementia, and that number is projected to rise significantly in the coming decades as the population ages.

Current Arizona Senator Mark Kelly, a Democrat, praised Kyl’s service, noting that he gave “decades of his life” to the state. “I’m grateful for his commitment to our state and country,” Kelly said.

Kyl’s retirement from public life marks the end of an era in Arizona politics. As one of the state’s most influential Republican figures, he helped shape policy during a period of significant growth and change for Arizona, which evolved from a reliably conservative stronghold to today’s competitive political battleground.

Throughout his career, Kyl maintained a reputation for thoughtful conservatism and a willingness to work across party lines on issues of importance to Arizona and the nation, particularly regarding water rights and national security.
