Former Chicago Mayor and Border Patrol Commander Clash in Escalating Public Feud

Tensions between former Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot and U.S. Border Patrol Commander Gregory Bovino have erupted into a heated public exchange, highlighting the deepening divide over immigration enforcement in America’s third-largest city.

Bovino, who commands Operation At Large in California, recently declared on social media that Border Patrol would maintain a long-term presence in Chicago. “If you think we’re done with Chicago, you’d better check yourself before you wreck yourself,” Bovino wrote on X, formerly Twitter. “Don’t call it a comeback; we’re gonna be here for years,” he added, referencing lyrics from LL Cool J’s “Mama Said Knock You Out.”

Lightfoot responded forcefully to Bovino’s statement, calling him a “glory hound” and condemning Border Patrol operations. “The actions of the CBP militia under his command have been unconstitutional and shameful. Hey, Greg, your day of reckoning is fast approaching,” she warned.

This exchange represents the latest chapter in ongoing conflicts between federal immigration authorities and Chicago’s leadership. The city has long maintained sanctuary policies limiting cooperation with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Protection (CBP).

Last week, Bovino made similar assertions about Border Patrol’s commitment to Chicago, stating, “Despite calls for violence against our agents, the brave men and women of the United States Border Patrol have come together and developed serious plans to help Chicago rid their streets of criminal illegal aliens.”

The controversy has also drawn in current Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson, who recently endorsed naming a city snowplow “Abolish ICE.” Johnson wrote on social media: “‘Abolish ICE’ has my full endorsement for the name of one of Chicago’s next Snow Plows. Remember to submit your choice by January 10th, 2026!”

Bovino quickly criticized Johnson’s suggestion, proposing instead that the city name a plow “Reality Check” and “paint it green while your [sic] at it.” Johnson responded by highlighting Bovino’s grammatical error and added, “Chicagoans vote on the snow plow names. The same people who want you out of our city.”

The public feud underscores broader national tensions over immigration policy. Chicago, like many major urban centers, has experienced significant migrant influxes in recent years, with thousands of asylum seekers arriving from the southern border. City officials have frequently criticized federal immigration enforcement tactics, while federal authorities maintain they’re targeting individuals with criminal histories.

Lightfoot, who served as Chicago’s mayor from 2019 to 2023, recently announced plans to create a real-time portal to track what she called “purported criminal actions of ICE and CBP agents” and vowed to “unmask” them. This declaration has drawn criticism from immigration enforcement supporters, including Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi, who put Lightfoot “on notice” regarding her statements.

Border Patrol operations in Chicago have sparked controversy in immigrant communities, with some residents and activists claiming enforcement actions have been aggressive and disruptive. In December, agents reportedly deployed pepper balls during an operation in an immigrant neighborhood, further inflaming tensions.

As federal immigration authorities continue operations in Chicago, the conflict appears likely to intensify, reflecting the deeply polarized national debate over immigration enforcement, sanctuary policies, and the appropriate relationship between federal and local authorities in addressing immigration issues.
