A controversial video featuring six Democratic lawmakers urging U.S. military personnel to reject unlawful orders has ignited fierce criticism, with President Donald Trump describing it as “seditious behavior.” The video, which went viral last week, has raised concerns about potential undermining of the military’s chain of command during an already tense political climate.

Former U.S. Army Captain Doug Truax, founder of Restoration of America, condemned the video in strong terms during an interview with Fox News Digital. “This is one of the most unpatriotic things I’ve seen in my lifetime,” Truax stated, expressing concern that such messaging could create chaos within military ranks by encouraging service members to question orders based on subjective moral judgments rather than legal standards.

The lawmakers featured in the video include Senators Elissa Slotkin (D-Michigan) and Mark Kelly (D-Arizona), along with Representatives Chris Deluzio (D-Pennsylvania), Maggie Goodlander (D-New Hampshire), Chrissy Houlahan (D-Pennsylvania), and Jason Crow (D-Colorado). All have backgrounds in military or intelligence service across branches including the Army, Navy, Air Force, and Central Intelligence Agency.

Secretary of War Pete Hegseth echoed Truax’s concerns, writing on social media platform X that while the video might seem innocuous to civilians, it carries significant weight within military circles. “In the military, vague rhetoric and ambiguity undermines trust, creates hesitation in the chain of command and erodes cohesion,” Hegseth noted, emphasizing that clear procedures for handling unlawful orders already exist within military structures.

Truax argued that the lawmakers’ military backgrounds actually make their message more problematic. “They should know better,” he said, suggesting their actions were motivated by political concerns rather than genuine military welfare. “This is all about political power. I think that everybody in there… they know they’re losing political power over time here because the country is moving in a direction that’s more conservative and less chaos and less lawlessness.”

The timing of the video has drawn particular criticism given recent political violence. Truax referenced the assassination attempt against President Trump and the killing of conservative commentator Charlie Kirk as evidence of an already volatile national environment. “We’ve got a lot of political violence already… We don’t need more fuel on the fire with what these guys are doing,” he said, characterizing the lawmakers as a “sophisticated D.C. cocktail version of Antifa” attempting to “fray the country further.”

While Truax expressed confidence that active-duty service members would remain unaffected by the controversy, he voiced concern for National Guard and reserve forces who might find themselves deployed in difficult civil situations. These personnel could face additional challenges when “following legal and lawful orders” in urban environments where political tensions are high.

The controversy touches on deeper historical wounds regarding the treatment of military personnel during politically divisive times. Truax drew parallels to the Vietnam era, when returning service members often faced hostility and criticism. He shared a personal example of his father-in-law, a Purple Heart recipient who served 20 years in the Army but still carries emotional scars from his treatment upon returning from Vietnam.

“When he came back it wasn’t pretty. And he’s a young guy, wounded, serving his country,” Truax recalled. “Nobody wants” to see today’s soldiers performing difficult missions only to return home and find themselves politically targeted for their service.

The debate highlights growing concerns about the politicization of military affairs during a period of significant national division. Military experts have long maintained that while service members have a duty to refuse illegal orders, introducing political messaging into this principle risks complicating an already clear chain of command at a time when national security challenges require cohesion and clarity.

  1. Promoting the notion that troops can simply disregard orders based on personal moral judgments is concerning. The military’s effectiveness relies on a clear hierarchy and disciplined execution of lawful directives.

    • James Thompson on

Exactly. The lawmakers’ message could embolden soldiers to act on their own political views rather than upholding their sworn duty. That would be a dangerous path for the armed forces.

  2. While I respect the lawmakers’ military backgrounds, their video seems misguided. Urging troops to disregard lawful orders based on personal moral judgments is a dangerous precedent that could destabilize the armed forces.

Absolutely. The military’s effectiveness relies on a clear chain of command and adherence to the rule of law. Undermining that foundation could lead to chaos and undermine the troops’ critical mission.

  3. This is a concerning development. Lawmakers should be strengthening the military’s cohesion and discipline, not actively undermining it. Soldiers need clear guidance, not partisan appeals to ignore their duties.

    • I share your concerns. The video’s message is reckless and could have far-reaching consequences for military readiness and morale. Lawmakers should be focused on supporting the troops, not encouraging them to disobey orders.

  4. This seems like a risky and divisive move by those lawmakers. Encouraging troops to disobey lawful orders could seriously undermine military discipline and readiness. I hope cooler heads prevail here.

I agree, this video could create a lot of confusion and chaos within the military. Troops need clear and consistent leadership, not partisan appeals to ignore the chain of command.

  5. Robert Hernandez on

I’m troubled by the lawmakers’ apparent disregard for the vital role of military obedience to lawful authority. Encouraging soldiers to question orders sets a worrying precedent that could have severe consequences.

    • Agreed. The video’s call for troops to disobey orders seems irresponsible and could sow discord within the ranks. The military’s chain of command must be respected, not undermined for political gain.
