Fetterman Breaks with Fellow Democrats to Support US-Israel Strikes on Iran

Pennsylvania Senator John Fetterman has emerged as a vocal Democrat supporting the joint US-Israeli strikes against Iran’s leadership, creating visible fractures within the Democratic party over Middle East policy. While many of his colleagues have criticized the operation, Fetterman has forcefully defended the military action that eliminated dozens of Iranian officials, including Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

“I’m not sure why it’s controversial to anyone to appreciate and celebrate wiping out 49 leaders of one of the most evil regimes in recorded history,” Fetterman wrote on social media following the operation. The senator later credited former President Donald Trump, stating he “has been willing to do what’s right and necessary to produce real peace in the region.”

The strikes, which were reportedly expedited after intelligence revealed several targeted Iranian officials were gathered in the same location, have sparked intense debate within Democratic ranks. Fetterman’s position highlights a growing divide between progressive Democrats who oppose military intervention and more centrist members who believe the action was justified.

Fetterman has been particularly blunt in his criticism of fellow Democrats who condemned the operation. “Every member in the U.S. Senate agrees we cannot allow Iran to acquire a nuclear weapon,” he posted. “I’m baffled why so many are unwilling to support the only action to achieve that. Empty sloganeering vs. commitment to global security — which is it?”

The Pennsylvania senator also declared he would vote against any War Powers Resolution aimed at limiting Trump’s military authority regarding Iran. This puts him directly at odds with colleagues like Virginia Senator Tim Kaine, who has called for an immediate Senate vote on his War Powers Resolution filed in January.

Kaine sharply criticized the military action, calling it a “dangerous, unnecessary, and idiotic action” and questioning Trump’s mental capacity. He has demanded that every senator go on record regarding the strikes.

Fetterman isn’t the only Democrat breaking party ranks on the issue. Former New York Mayor Eric Adams also criticized those condemning the strikes, highlighting the human rights abuses and attacks on Americans committed by Iran’s leadership. Ohio Representative Gregory Landsman similarly praised the operation while expressing reservations about Trump’s broader plans, telling the Cincinnati Enquirer: “In the end I trust the generals and I trust our military.”

The division reflects broader tensions within the Democratic party about Israel policy and military intervention in the Middle East. Since the outbreak of the Israel-Hamas conflict last year, Democrats have struggled to maintain a unified position, with progressive members pushing for more criticism of Israel’s military actions while others maintain strong support for the U.S. ally.

The Iranian strikes represent a significant escalation in regional tensions that had been building for months. The operation targeted not only Khamenei but dozens of other key Iranian officials, potentially creating a leadership vacuum in Tehran at a critical moment in Middle East politics.

For Fetterman, the support for these military actions aligns with his increasingly pro-Israel positions, which have sometimes put him at odds with the progressive wing of his party. His staunch defense of the operation signals that foreign policy differences within the Democratic coalition remain significant, particularly on issues relating to Israel and Iran.

As the situation in the Middle East continues to develop, these internal party divisions may further complicate Democratic messaging on foreign policy ahead of upcoming elections, with voters potentially seeing mixed signals about the party’s stance on critical international security issues.
