In a scathing critique of his own party, Sen. John Fetterman of Pennsylvania has outlined what he believes led to the Democratic Party’s crushing defeat in the 2024 elections, citing a disconnect with working-class voters and policy failures that alienated traditional supporters.

In his newly released memoir “Unfettered,” Fetterman delivers an unfiltered assessment of how Democrats lost touch with their base, contributing to Donald Trump’s victory over Kamala Harris and a significant power shift in Washington.

“We became the party of the elites, one that had lost touch with its base,” Fetterman writes in the book published Tuesday. His critique comes at a pivotal moment for Democrats who are struggling to rebuild their brand and unify their congressional ranks following their electoral losses.

The Pennsylvania senator, known for his unconventional appearance and independent streak within the Democratic caucus, argues that the party’s transformation into what he characterizes as an elitist organization focused on “celebrity endorsements” alienated core constituencies, particularly working-class voters who once formed the backbone of Democratic support.

Fetterman takes particular issue with what he perceives as the party’s hostility toward men, both in rhetoric and policy. “The continued speech and policies against men have not been without consequences,” he writes, adding bluntly: “If men are forced to choose between picking their party or keeping their balls, most men are going to choose their balls.”

Immigration policy features prominently in Fetterman’s critique. While identifying himself as pro-immigration, he condemns his party’s handling of the southern border crisis under the Biden administration. The Democratic assertion that “an open border is a compassionate policy” fails to acknowledge reality, according to Fetterman.

“It is chaos, both for those immigrants and for the citizens impacted by the overwhelming number of people coming in who need assistance,” he writes. This disconnect on border security likely played a decisive role in the 2024 election outcomes, he suggests, with Democrats “telling its voters to not believe their own eyes.”

The timing of Fetterman’s memoir coincides with recent Democratic struggles during the government shutdown, when Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and most Democrats insisted on addressing expiring Obamacare subsidies before reopening the government. This strategy ultimately failed when Fetterman and several colleagues broke ranks to support a Republican-led solution.

Though Fetterman has frequently diverged from Schumer’s positions, particularly during the shutdown, he offers limited commentary on the Senate Democratic leader in his book. He briefly mentions Schumer’s 2023 decision to change Senate dress code rules to accommodate Fetterman’s casual attire of hoodies and basketball shorts — a policy Schumer later reversed in early 2024.

“Schumer was forced to reverse himself and enforce a dress code aimed at me,” Fetterman notes, one of few direct references to the party’s Senate leadership.

The broader message of Fetterman’s memoir reflects growing concerns about the Democratic Party’s direction and its ability to reconnect with voters who increasingly perceive Democrats as “soft and gooey, with a platform built on ideals that weren’t based in the reality of the average person.”

As Democrats conduct their post-election analysis and chart a path forward, Fetterman’s candid assessment represents a significant voice from within the party challenging its current direction. His memoir suggests that returning to working-class priorities and addressing policy failures head-on may be necessary for Democrats to rebuild their electoral coalition after their 2024 losses.

The book arrives as Democrats grapple with their diminished power in Washington and search for a coherent message that can unite both progressives and moderates within their ranks.

  1. As someone who has always prided themselves on being the party of the common person, it’s troubling to see the Democrats struggle so badly with connecting to working-class voters. Fetterman’s insights could be a crucial wake-up call if they’re willing to listen and adapt.

  2. Jennifer Williams on

Fetterman’s critique of the Democratic Party as elitist and disconnected from the working class is a bold and necessary wake-up call. It’s vital for the party to reconnect with its roots and address the concerns of blue-collar voters if it hopes to regain power.

  3. Interesting to see a prominent Democrat like Fetterman calling out his own party’s failings. His perspective as a Senator from a key swing state like Pennsylvania carries a lot of weight. The Democrats would be wise to heed his warnings about their perceived disconnect from the working class.

    • Agreed. Fetterman’s critique aligns with broader concerns about the Democratic Party becoming increasingly viewed as the party of the elite, urban professionals rather than the traditional working-class base. They’ll need to make some hard changes to regain that connection.

  4. Olivia S. Moore on

Fetterman’s critique aligns with what I’ve observed – the Democratic Party does seem to have drifted away from its working-class roots in recent years, becoming more associated with coastal elites than the rust belt and heartland. It’s an issue they’ll need to address.

  5. Fascinating to see a prominent Democrat like Fetterman being so blunt about his party’s failings. His perspective as a Senator from Pennsylvania, a key swing state, carries a lot of weight. The Democrats would be wise to seriously consider his analysis.
