The Trump administration has launched an investigation into New York City Public Schools following allegations that pro-Palestinian teachers promoted anti-Jewish sentiment in classrooms. The Education Department’s Office for Civil Rights announced the probe approximately two weeks ago, responding to reports that teachers organized seminars supporting Palestinian resistance while characterizing Zionists as “genocidal white supremacists.”

“No child should be taught by his or her teachers to hate their peers. Neither should Jewish children be taught that being Jewish somehow makes them inherently guilty or proponents of hate and violence,” said Assistant Secretary for Civil Rights Kimberly Richey in a statement, adding that “the Trump Administration will not turn a blind eye to antisemitic harassment.”

The investigation comes during the fifth month of NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s administration. Mamdani has faced significant criticism for his stance on Israel, having previously accused Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of war crimes and described the situation in Palestine as a “genocide.” Since taking office, he has revoked executive orders that prohibited city officials from boycotting Israel and that expanded the definition of antisemitism.

At the center of the investigation is a group called NYC Educators for Palestine, whose stated mission indicates that “education should be a tool for liberation not occupation” and advocates for teachers to work “both inside and outside the classroom” to advance Palestinian justice. The Education Department specifically cited the group’s teaching seminars on “Palestinian, Zionism, and Resistance” as potentially violating Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

According to complaints, these seminars, which were presented to children as young as five, focused on “contemporary and historical Palestinian resistance” and allegedly portrayed Zionists as “genocidal white supremacists.” The sessions reportedly endorsed support for Hamas and its “martyrs.” The group had also planned a “Teach-In for Palestine” scheduled for Martin Luther King Jr. Day, advertised for students as young as six years old.

A spokesperson for New York City Public Schools has denied any official affiliation with NYC Educators for Palestine, stating firmly: “The group referenced is not connected to New York City Public Schools.” However, one parent told Fox News that teachers appeared “so radicalized and so focused on sending messages like this [pro-Palestine] rather than focusing on really crucial skills like literacy and critical thinking.”

The investigation into New York City’s school system is part of a broader effort by the Trump administration to address allegations of antisemitism in educational institutions across the country since the outbreak of the Gaza War. Last August, the administration initiated an investigation into Baltimore City Public Schools over similar concerns of antisemitic harassment, which remains ongoing.

The federal government has also notified more than 60 colleges and universities about pending investigations related to their alleged failure to properly address antisemitism on their campuses. These investigations reflect growing concerns about how educational institutions are handling discussions of the Israel-Palestine conflict and protecting Jewish students from discrimination.

The New York City investigation highlights the intensifying debate over how schools address politically sensitive international conflicts in classroom settings, particularly when such discussions involve ethnic, religious, or national identities. It also raises questions about the boundaries between political education and potential discrimination, and the responsibility of schools to provide balanced perspectives on complex global issues.

As the investigation proceeds, it will likely spark further conversation about the appropriate ways to teach about international conflicts while maintaining educational environments free from bias and discrimination against any student group.
