In a quiet Minneapolis neighborhood adorned with pride flags and holiday lights, the fatal shooting of Renee Good by a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer has sparked controversy and grief, challenging the Trump administration’s narrative of the incident.

Good, a 37-year-old mother of three, was killed behind the wheel of her Honda Pilot shortly after dropping off her youngest child at an elementary school. While administration officials continue to characterize Good as a domestic terrorist who attempted to ram federal agents with her vehicle, family members, friends, and neighbors remember her as a gentle, kind-hearted woman.

The Colorado-born U.S. citizen had recently relocated to Minneapolis from Kansas City, Missouri, with her 6-year-old son and her wife. Her neighborhood, now mourning her loss, has grown weary of media attention. One residence displayed a handwritten sign reading “NO MEDIA INQUIRES” and “JUSTICE FOR RENEE.”

In stark contrast to President Trump’s rhetoric about targeting dangerous criminals through immigration enforcement, Good’s record appears to contain nothing more serious than a single traffic ticket.

On social media, Good described herself as a “poet and writer and wife and mom” who was “experiencing Minneapolis,” displaying a pride emoji on her Instagram account. Her profile picture on Pinterest showed her smiling with a young child, alongside posts about everyday interests like tattoos, hairstyles, and home decorating.

Her ex-husband, who requested anonymity to protect their children, stated that Good was not politically active and had never participated in protests. According to him, she was simply heading home when she encountered the ICE agents on a snow-covered street.

The incident has drawn sharp criticism from local officials. Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey dismissed the self-defense argument as “garbage,” citing video evidence. Bystander footage posted to social media shows the rapid escalation of events. In the video, an officer approaches Good’s car, demands she open the door, and grabs the handle. As she begins to pull forward, another ICE officer standing in front of the vehicle immediately draws his weapon and fires at least two shots at close range. The entire confrontation lasted less than 10 seconds.

In aftermath footage, a distraught woman, presumably Good’s wife, can be heard crying, “That’s my wife, I don’t know what to do!”

Despite freezing rain, dozens gathered Thursday at the site where Good was killed, blocking the one-way street with steel drums filled with burning wood for warmth. Passersby stopped to pay respects at a makeshift memorial featuring bouquets and a handmade cross.

Good’s background paints a picture far removed from the administration’s characterization. Her ex-husband described her as a devoted Christian who participated in youth mission trips to Northern Ireland in her younger years. She loved singing, participated in a high school chorus, and studied vocal performance in college.

She also studied creative writing at Old Dominion University in Virginia, winning a prize for her work in 2020. Kent Wascom, who taught Good in the creative writing program, remembered her balancing motherhood with academic responsibilities in 2019. “What stood out to me in her prose was that, unlike a lot of young fiction writers, her focus was outward rather than inward,” Wascom said. “Her presence helped make the classroom a really supportive place.”

Good was mother to three children: a 15-year-old daughter and 12-year-old son from her first marriage, and a 6-year-old son from her second marriage to a husband who died in 2023. In recent years, she had primarily been a stay-at-home mom, though she previously worked as a dental assistant and at a credit union.

Her mother, Donna Ganger, told the Minnesota Star Tribune that the family was notified of Good’s death late Wednesday morning. “Renee was one of the kindest people I’ve ever known,” Ganger said. “She was extremely compassionate. She’s taken care of people all her life. She was loving, forgiving and affectionate. She was an amazing human being.”

As investigations continue, the stark contrast between official statements and community accounts raises serious questions about the circumstances surrounding this tragic incident.
