House Ethics Committee Launches Comprehensive Investigation into Rep. Cory Mills

The House Ethics Committee announced Wednesday it will conduct a wide-ranging investigation into Florida Republican Representative Cory Mills, examining multiple allegations including campaign finance violations, misuse of congressional resources, and claims of sexual misconduct or dating violence.

The investigation comes in the wake of a Florida judge ordering Mills last month to have no contact with his ex-girlfriend and to maintain a 500-foot distance from her home and workplace. The restraining order, in effect through the end of 2025, also prohibits Mills from mentioning his ex-girlfriend on social media. Any violation could result in fines or imprisonment. The judge determined that the woman was either a victim of dating violence or at risk of becoming one.

The scope of the Ethics Committee investigation extends beyond the personal relationship issues. The committee will also examine whether Mills failed to properly disclose required information on House financial statements, violated campaign finance laws during his two congressional campaigns, and improperly solicited or received gifts related to privately sponsored official travel.

In a statement, the Ethics Committee emphasized that the formation of an investigative subcommittee does not itself indicate any wrongdoing has occurred. This standard disclaimer highlights the preliminary nature of the investigation.

Mills, currently serving his second term representing Florida’s 7th congressional district, defended himself on the House floor following the announcement. “I believe that all the accusations and false things that are being said will be proven to be absolutely false in many ways,” Mills stated. “I have the evidence and receipts and look forward to working with them.”

The ethics probe announcement came on the same day that Rep. Nancy Mace (R-S.C.) introduced a censure resolution against Mills that would strip him of his assignments on the House Armed Services Committee and the Committee on Foreign Affairs. Speaking on the House floor, Mace outlined various controversies surrounding Mills, stating in her resolution that his behavior “brings discredit upon the House.” Her allegations included claims that Mills misrepresented aspects of his military service in addition to referencing the protective order.

Later Wednesday, the House voted 310-103 on Mills’ request to refer Mace’s resolution to the Ethics Committee, with support from the majority of both Republicans and Democrats. This procedural move effectively pauses any immediate action on the censure resolution while the committee conducts its investigation.

Mace criticized this development, calling it a “naked attempt to kill my resolution” and arguing that the committee investigation was unnecessary in light of the court’s findings. “Common sense tells us we don’t need an investigative subcommittee to decide if Cory Mills, who a Court found to be an immediate and present danger of committing dating violence against a woman, should serve on committees related to national security,” she said.

The case represents the latest in a series of ethics investigations in a Congress where internal discipline has become increasingly contentious. The House has seen numerous ethics probes and censure resolutions in recent years, reflecting heightened partisan tensions and growing willingness to use ethics procedures against colleagues.

Mills, a former Defense Department contractor and Army veteran who was first elected to Congress in 2022, has positioned himself as a conservative hardliner during his time in office. The timeline for the Ethics Committee investigation remains unclear, though such probes typically take months to complete.
