Senator Elizabeth Warren has officially endorsed political newcomer Graham Platner in Maine’s closely watched Democratic primary, setting the stage for what promises to be one of the most consequential Senate races of the election cycle.

Warren announced her support in a video statement released Wednesday by Platner’s campaign, providing a significant boost to the oyster farmer and combat veteran as he challenges Governor Janet Mills for the Democratic nomination. The winner of the June 9 primary will face incumbent Republican Senator Susan Collins in November.

“I endorse Graham Platner because I know he is a fighter on behalf of working families, and because he doesn’t take any corporate PAC money,” Warren said in her endorsement. “We need more people here in Washington who are less about go along to get along, and more about fighting to make the kind of changes that families need.”

In her endorsement, Warren emphasized Platner’s military service, noting his deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan. “Graham knows the consequences of Donald Trump sending our service members to fight endless wars in the Middle East,” she stated, highlighting his firsthand experience with national security issues.

The Massachusetts senator’s endorsement frames Platner as an outsider who would bring a fresh perspective to Washington, drawing an implicit contrast with Mills, who has secured backing from much of the Democratic establishment. This positioning aligns with progressive criticism of Mills as too conventional in her approach to politics.

Warren’s support comes at a pivotal moment for Platner’s campaign, which has weathered recent controversies. The Mills campaign launched a substantial advertising offensive highlighting controversial comments Platner allegedly made on Reddit more than a decade ago, including crude remarks about sexual assault. The ads also drew attention to a tattoo on Platner’s chest that reportedly resembled a Nazi symbol.

Platner has apologized for the Reddit posts and addressed concerns about the tattoo. He characterized Mills’ advertising as a “desperate” attack from a candidate “who is trailing an oyster farmer in every recent poll.” When asked about these controversies in an interview with HuffPost, Warren acknowledged them but expressed confidence in Platner’s apology: “Look, he has apologized for that, and he’s out there talking to the people of Maine every single day.”

The Maine Senate race holds national significance as Democrats seek to regain control of the upper chamber. Collins represents the last Republican senator from a state that did not support Donald Trump in any of his presidential campaigns, making her seat a prime target for Democrats hoping to expand their influence in Congress.

With Republicans currently holding a narrow Senate majority, national political groups have identified Maine as a key battleground and have begun directing millions of dollars into the race. The contest has effectively become a proxy battle for control of the U.S. Senate.

Collins, seeking her sixth term, faces significant challenges in Maine’s political environment. The state’s ranked-choice voting system adds another layer of complexity to her re-election bid, potentially complicating traditional campaign strategies.

As the primary approaches, the Warren endorsement signals increasing national attention on this race, with prominent Democrats taking sides in what has become an increasingly contentious primary battle. The outcome will not only determine Collins’ challenger but could ultimately influence which party controls the Senate following the November elections.
