The Department of Homeland Security has forcefully responded to accusations from several Illinois Democrats, defending its immigration enforcement operations and insisting that agents are indeed focusing on dangerous criminal offenders rather than conducting indiscriminate raids.
In a statement obtained exclusively by Fox News Digital, DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin refuted claims made by Senator Dick Durbin and other Illinois Democrats who had characterized the agency’s recent “Operation Midway Blitz” as unnecessarily aggressive and misleading in its targets.
“As Democrat politicians try to bamboozle the American public and assert DHS law enforcement is not targeting the worst of the worst criminal illegal aliens, our brave ICE law enforcement are putting their lives on the line to remove pedophiles, drug traffickers, and other violent thugs from American neighborhoods,” McLaughlin stated, emphasizing that the agency continues to prioritize “criminal illegal aliens convicted of heinous crimes.”
To substantiate her point, McLaughlin detailed several recent arrests, including that of Mexican national Cristian Mendivil-Diaz, who was convicted of aggravated battery of a child and domestic battery in Illinois. Other apprehensions included Burmese national Liam San, convicted of indecent liberties with a child in North Carolina, and Salvadoran national Guillermo Guevara-Serrano, who was convicted of aggravated assault on a minor in Dallas.
Additional arrests highlighted by McLaughlin included Jamaican national Orville C. Weir, convicted of lewd acts with a minor near Fort Lauderdale, and Andre Lubala from Congo, who was convicted of aggravated assault in Tennessee.
The dispute arose after Senator Durbin led Illinois’ Democratic delegation in releasing what they called a “fact sheet” that characterized DHS’s public statements as a “misinformation campaign.” In their joint statement, the Democrats condemned the agency’s enforcement activities in Illinois as “unprovoked, unnecessary, and unhelpful.”
“The photos and videos out of Illinois are horrific, showing unspeakable acts committed by the United States government against its own civilians, including teargassing, pepper spraying, racial profiling, excessive force, and physical violence,” Durbin asserted in his criticism of the operation.
Representative Delia Ramirez, a member of the progressive “Squad” from Chicago, went further, calling McLaughlin and other DHS officials including Secretary Kristi Noem and Border Czar Thomas Homan “vicious liars” who she claimed were manipulating information to conceal unlawful actions.
“I am proud to work with my colleagues of the Illinois congressional delegation to set the record straight on the terror and lawlessness that ICE and CBP have inflicted on our communities,” Ramirez stated.
Other Illinois Democrats joined the chorus of criticism. Representative Jesus Garcia claimed to have witnessed “brutality and abuses” firsthand in his heavily Hispanic Chicago district, adding, “My grandchild is scared because their helicopters are hovering at night over our neighborhood. People are being detained and disappeared.”
Representative Bill Foster, who represents suburban counties west of Chicago, characterized the operation not as legitimate law enforcement but as “a campaign of fear and intimidation,” claiming that “Federal agents, under orders from the Trump administration, have repeatedly used violence against peaceful communities.”
Representative Lauren Underwood similarly accused DHS of engaging in a “horrifying campaign to spread fear in our communities, trample over our constitutional rights, and violently snatch people from our streets.”
The heated exchange highlights the deep political divide over immigration enforcement policies in the United States. While DHS insists its operations target serious criminal offenders who pose threats to public safety, critics contend the agency’s tactics are overly aggressive and disruptive to immigrant communities, including those with legal status.
The controversy over Operation Midway Blitz comes amid heightened national tensions around immigration policy, with federal enforcement agencies caught between pressure to address illegal immigration and criticism over their methods and priorities.
