The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has publicly criticized four California House Democrats for meeting with an undocumented immigrant accused of serious crimes at an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention facility in San Diego.
According to DHS officials, Representatives Juan Vargas, Mike Levin, Sara Jacobs, and Scott Peters visited the ICE San Diego Field Office on Monday, where they requested to speak with a Honduran national facing charges of kidnapping and domestic abuse.
“Democrats once again chose to stand with a criminal illegal alien over American citizens,” said Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin in a strongly worded statement. “This criminal illegal alien these Democrat lawmakers met with has been charged with kidnapping and domestic abuse.”
The individual in question has been identified as Dennis Mauricio Rojas-Molina, who was previously deported from the United States in 2015. According to DHS records, Rojas-Molina was initially arrested by U.S. Border Patrol near Lukeville, Arizona, during the Obama administration in summer 2015. Following his arrest, he was released into the country before an immigration judge issued a final removal order. He was subsequently deported in October 2015 but re-entered the United States illegally at an undetermined time.
In May of this year, Rojas-Molina was arrested on charges of kidnapping and spousal battery, placing him in ICE custody.
McLaughlin characterized the congressional representatives as “sanctuary politicians” who are undermining law enforcement efforts to remove dangerous individuals from the country. “These sanctuary politicians continue to smear law enforcement and falsely claim ICE is not targeting the worst of the worst. It’s disgusting that these sanctuary politicians continue to do the bidding of criminal illegal aliens,” she said.
The congressional delegation has offered a different perspective on the situation. In a video posted to Representative Levin’s social media account on Monday, the lawmakers held a news conference following their visit to the detention facility. While not specifically naming Rojas-Molina, Levin confirmed they had visited a detainee who was recently arrested, mentioning that the individual has two children, ages 11 and 5.
“Folks like him need a path to stay,” Levin stated during the news conference. “They need a path to legal status so that they can continue to work hard and contribute positively to our economy… We need to treat them better than this.”
Representative Jacobs also commented on the situation on social media, claiming that “ICE isn’t going after criminals; they’re targeting your neighbors and friends.” This statement appears to have particularly drawn the ire of DHS officials.
In response to the lawmakers’ characterizations, DHS defended its enforcement priorities, stating that 70 percent of undocumented immigrants arrested by ICE have criminal convictions or pending charges in the United States. The department emphasized that this figure doesn’t include individuals wanted for crimes in other countries, those with INTERPOL notices, or those facing human rights violations.
“The department continues to focus its enforcement efforts on murderers, rapists, gang members, pedophiles, terrorists, and other dangerous individuals,” DHS officials stated.
This incident highlights the ongoing tension between the Biden administration’s immigration enforcement policies and progressive Democrats who have advocated for more lenient approaches toward undocumented immigrants. The controversy comes amid heightened national debate over immigration policy following President-elect Donald Trump’s victory in the November election, with his campaign having prominently featured promises of stricter border enforcement and expanded deportation efforts.
Fox News Digital reached out to all four representatives involved in the incident for additional comment, but responses were not reported at the time of publication.

This is a complex and divisive issue without easy answers. I hope the legislators and DHS can find a constructive way to engage and address the concerns on both sides. Maintaining the rule of law is important, but so is upholding democratic principles.
As an investor in mining and energy companies, I’m curious how this political debate around immigration enforcement could impact the broader business climate and investment landscape, particularly for industries reliant on migrant labor. Thoughtful policymaking is key.
Good point. The economic implications of immigration policies are an important consideration that policymakers should weigh carefully. Balanced solutions that protect both security and economic interests would be ideal.

It’s a complex issue without easy answers. I appreciate the legislators trying to understand the situation firsthand, though the DHS response seems quite critical.
The DHS response seems rather combative. While the alleged crimes are serious, I wonder if there are ways to address security concerns while also upholding democratic principles of transparency and oversight. This is a nuanced issue worth exploring further.
