DHS Rebukes Chicago Mayor Over Immigration Enforcement Criticism

A heated exchange between Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson and federal immigration officials has escalated after Johnson condemned Border Patrol commander Gregory Bovino for immigration enforcement operations in the city.

During a recent press conference, Johnson characterized Bovino as someone who “provokes terror on people” and compared the Border Patrol’s “Operation Midway Blitz” enforcement raids to historical racist imagery such as lynchings and anti-desegregation events from the 20th century.

The Department of Homeland Security quickly fired back at the mayor’s comments. DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin told Fox News Digital that “Mayor Brandon Johnson is once again demonizing ICE and CBP law enforcement officers who are facing a more than 1,000% increase in assaults and 8,000% increase in death threats against them.”

McLaughlin further criticized Johnson’s priorities, stating, “Mayor Johnson has shown time and time again he does not care about the innocent American lives taken at the hands of gang members, murderers, drug traffickers, and rapists who have no right to be in this country.”

The controversy intensified after federal agents posed for photos at Chicago’s iconic “Bean” sculpture during their operations. Johnson called these images “wicked and vile,” prompting DHS to counter by sharing photos of recently arrested illegal immigrants with violent backgrounds, suggesting these individuals should be considered the truly “wicked and vile” elements.

Johnson took particular issue with Bovino’s public conduct, including an incident where the commander saluted supporters while walking into federal court surrounded by protesters shouting obscenities. The mayor also criticized social media posts by DHS that featured hip-hop music alongside immigration enforcement operations, calling it “some real racist jacked-up stuff.”

The Chicago mayor connected the current enforcement actions to the Trump administration, claiming Bovino is acting “under the direction of his king” and that the president has “unleashed Bovino to unleash tear gas on police officers and babies.”

In his most controversial remarks, Johnson drew parallels between current immigration enforcement and historical segregation efforts, referencing former Democratic governors Orval Faubus of Arkansas and George Wallace of Alabama, who both attempted to block school desegregation in the mid-20th century.

“What Bovino and the Border Patrol are executing right now have the same grotesque proclivity as those who have worked incredibly hard to dehumanize, historically, people who have been placed in the margins,” Johnson said.

This conflict highlights the growing tension between federal immigration enforcement priorities and sanctuary city policies embraced by many Democratic-led municipalities. Chicago has long maintained sanctuary status, limiting local cooperation with federal immigration authorities.

Operation Midway Blitz represents an intensification of federal immigration enforcement in Chicago, targeting individuals who have entered the country illegally and are suspected of criminal activity. The operation has resulted in numerous arrests but has drawn criticism from local officials and immigrant advocacy groups.

The public dispute between Mayor Johnson and federal officials underscores the deeply divisive nature of immigration policy in the United States, particularly in urban centers with large immigrant populations. As federal operations continue in Chicago, the rhetoric from both sides shows no signs of cooling, suggesting further confrontations may lie ahead.
