Florida has arrested more than 10,000 illegal immigrants since launching a statewide crackdown last year, Governor Ron DeSantis announced during a Monday news conference in Tallahassee.
The initiative, dubbed “Operation Tidal Wave,” began in April 2025 as a partnership between Florida and federal law enforcement agencies in what officials described as the largest joint immigration enforcement operation in the history of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
“Today, I was proud to announce a new milestone in our joint efforts to combat illegal immigration and restore order in our communities,” DeSantis wrote on social media platform X, confirming that Florida law enforcement had arrested 10,400 illegal immigrants across the state.
The announcement comes amid a significant financial boost for immigration enforcement in Florida. In September, DeSantis joined ICE Deputy Director Madison D. Sheahan to reveal that the state would receive $38 million in additional funding for immigration enforcement operations. Of this amount, $28 million is allocated for state-level initiatives, while $10 million is directed to local law enforcement agencies.
These funds represent a portion of the $1.7 billion being distributed nationwide under President Trump’s immigration legislation, which Sheahan referred to as the “Big, Beautiful Bill.” According to ICE, the Florida allocation includes $2.7 million to support transportation for local agencies and $7.3 million for equipment benefiting 974 local officers. At the state level, $1 million is designated for transportation costs, while $27.5 million will provide equipment for 3,676 state officers.
Florida’s enforcement strategy relies heavily on the 287(g) program, a federal initiative that empowers state and local law enforcement officers to assist in immigration enforcement duties. ICE officials noted that Florida has “set the standard” nationwide with 325 such agreements in place, the most of any state.
The robust immigration enforcement stance reflects Florida’s growing prominence in the national immigration debate. The state has taken an aggressive approach toward enforcing immigration laws under DeSantis’s administration, positioning itself as a counterpoint to states and localities that have adopted sanctuary policies limiting cooperation with federal immigration authorities.
During the September funding announcement, DeSantis issued a stern warning against any potential threats to immigration enforcement personnel. “Florida is not Portland,” the governor declared. “If you think you can go and launch attacks against ICE agents in this state, you’ve got another thing coming. We will hold you accountable very swiftly and very severely.”
The Florida crackdown comes as immigration remains a divisive political issue nationwide. Critics of aggressive enforcement measures argue they can lead to family separations and community fear, while supporters maintain such actions are necessary for national security and rule of law.
The partnership between Florida and federal authorities represents a shift from the tensions that often characterized state-federal immigration relationships during the previous administration. Under President Trump’s direction, ICE has expanded cooperation with willing states like Florida while providing substantial financial support for enforcement activities.
Law enforcement officials have indicated that those arrested include individuals with prior criminal records, though specific demographic details about the 10,400 people detained have not been fully disclosed. The operation continues as part of the broader national effort to address illegal immigration, with Florida positioning itself as a leading example of state-federal cooperation on enforcement.
As the program continues, state officials expect the number of arrests to increase further, particularly with the additional funding now flowing into state and local law enforcement agencies for immigration-related activities.
