In a striking move amid escalating tensions with Iran, a group of House Democrats has formally called on Speaker Mike Johnson to cancel next week’s scheduled recess and keep legislators in Washington. The request comes as U.S. and Israeli forces continue military operations against Iranian targets that began nearly a week ago.

Led by Representative Jared Moskowitz of Florida, ten Democratic lawmakers signed a letter delivered to Speaker Johnson on Friday, emphasizing the gravity of the situation unfolding in the Middle East.

“The attacks have resulted in heightened threat assessments around the globe as well as multiple deaths, including the tragic loss of six U.S. service members. At this sensitive time, we believe it is in the best interest of our constituents if we remain in session as events continue to develop,” the lawmakers wrote.

The request goes beyond simply maintaining the House schedule; the Democrats are also advocating for convening national security-related committees to address the heightened threat environment facing the United States.

Their letter specifically notes the potentially extended nature of the conflict, referencing President Trump’s acknowledgment that “current military operations against Iran could be sustained for weeks.” The Democrats argue that congressional absence during this critical period would represent a failure of oversight responsibilities.

“The rapid developments of such an operation, and its potential impact here at home, require a firm commitment to legislative engagement,” they stated in their appeal to Johnson. “If the House of Representatives is absent during such a pivotal moment in our foreign policy, we will be failing our constituents.”

The House is currently scheduled to be out of session next week as Republican lawmakers gather at President Trump’s Doral golf club in Florida for their annual policy retreat. While GOP leadership maintains they will continue monitoring developments from Florida, Democrats insist physical presence in Washington is necessary under the circumstances.

The debate over whether to remain in session reflects broader partisan divisions regarding the administration’s approach to Iran. Democrats have generally criticized what they characterize as the administration plunging the U.S. into another open-ended Middle East conflict without proper congressional authorization. Republicans, meanwhile, have largely defended the operations as necessary and within presidential authority.

This disagreement played out on the House floor Thursday when Republican leadership brought forward a vote on Department of Homeland Security funding using a bipartisan bill that Democrats had previously opposed as insufficient to restrain Trump’s immigration policies. GOP leaders argued that the ongoing situation with Iran makes the partial DHS shutdown particularly dangerous.

Speaker Johnson criticized Democrats after all but four voted against the measure, stating, “They do not want to fund the agencies whose job it is to keep Americans safe at this time of this heightened threat environment that we’re all living in. We’re concerned about sleeper cells in the country. We’re concerned about the safety of every American. And the Democrats are playing politics here.”

A House Republican leadership aide responded directly to Moskowitz’s letter, telling Fox News Digital, “Bipartisan majorities in both chambers of Congress just voted to support President Trump and Operation Epic Fury because they know the Iranian regime is a real threat to American security and Middle East stability. By contrast, most House Democrats, including Rep. Moskowitz, voted to keep the Department of Homeland Security closed in order to protect the criminal illegal immigrants they allowed into our country.”

The standoff highlights the complex interplay between national security concerns, partisan positioning, and institutional responsibilities as tensions in the Middle East continue to escalate. Whether Speaker Johnson will heed the Democrats’ call to cancel the scheduled recess remains to be seen, but the request underscores the serious nature of the ongoing military operations against Iran and their potential consequences for U.S. security.

This is a tense situation that requires close congressional oversight. Keeping the House in session seems prudent given the escalating conflict with Iran and the need for lawmakers to monitor the situation and provide guidance.

While I appreciate the Democrats’ desire for oversight, I hope this doesn’t turn into partisan grandstanding. This is a serious national security issue that requires bipartisan cooperation.

I’m glad to see the Democrats calling for the House to remain in session. With U.S. troops involved, it’s critical that Congress is actively engaged and able to respond quickly to developments.

Agreed. This is no time for Congress to take a recess. They need to be on the job and providing leadership during a crisis.

  5. Oliver Garcia on

It’s good that the Democrats are pushing for the House to stay in session, but I’m curious what specific actions they think Congress should be taking at this stage. Oversight is important, but what concrete steps do they propose?

  6. This seems like an appropriate response from the Democrats. With American lives at stake, Congress needs to be actively engaged and ready to provide guidance and support as the situation evolves.
