Democrats Blame Trump for Sparking Nationwide Redistricting Battles
Democratic lawmakers are forcefully defending their party’s response to redistricting efforts across the country, placing responsibility for the escalating political battle squarely on former President Donald Trump.
“Donald Trump started this battle, and if people thought Democrats were going to sit on their hands while this happened, that was not the case,” Rep. Jim McGovern of Massachusetts told reporters. “We’re going to fight back.”
The accusations follow a significant Democratic victory in Virginia, where voters narrowly approved a congressional redistricting referendum backed by Democratic Governor Abigail Spanberger. The referendum could potentially give Democrats four additional House seats, shifting momentum in the closely contested race for control of the U.S. House of Representatives ahead of the 2026 midterms.
Democrats point to Trump’s intervention in Texas as the catalyst for what has become a nationwide redistricting struggle. “It all starts with Donald Trump asking Gov. Abbott to do an unusual mid-decade redistricting,” explained Rep. Mark Takano of California.
Rep. Pete Aguilar of California echoed this sentiment: “Democrats did not want this. Republicans engaged in redistricting discussions in Indiana and in Kansas and in all these other places. It’s incredibly frustrating. Republicans started this fight, but Democrats and the American people are going to end it.”
The unusual timing of these redistricting efforts—occurring in the middle of a decade rather than after a census—has heightened tensions. Rep. Madeleine Dean of Pennsylvania characterized the situation bluntly: “Mr. Trump said in Texas he was owed five seats, and that’s what triggered redistricting with no transparency. Just a grab by the president.”
Several Democratic representatives described their party’s actions as defensive rather than aggressive. “What Democrats have done is just play defense,” said Takano. “We’re not going to roll over and just allow this to happen.”
Rep. Hank Johnson of Georgia offered a particularly pointed assessment of the situation, suggesting the implications go beyond mere partisan politics. “I think that Trump started a slippery slope that we’re sliding down,” Johnson said. “Partisan gerrymandering is a fig leaf for what’s really happening, which is the racialized redistricting meant to make America great again by excluding Black folks from being able to elect the representatives of their choice, Black and brown people.”
The redistricting battles reflect the high stakes for both parties in controlling the House after the 2026 midterms. While both Democrats and Republicans are employing similar tactics, Democrats maintain they were forced into this position by Trump’s initial actions.
Rep. Shri Thanedar of Michigan summed up the Democratic position: “No one should be interfering with the democratic process, but Mr. Trump was the one who initiated it.”
While Rep. Judy Chu of California suggested the redistricting battles might be winding down—”I think we may have seen the end of any viable redistricting right now before the election”—others indicated Democrats would remain vigilant and responsive.
Takano was particularly direct about his party’s approach: “You can’t bring a knife to a gunfight and say, ‘Hey, Republicans can just change districts mid-decade without a response.'”
The Virginia referendum victory has energized Democrats, who see it as a counterbalance to Republican redistricting efforts in states like Texas, Indiana, and Kansas. With control of the House potentially hanging in the balance, these district-by-district battles could ultimately determine which party holds power after the 2026 elections.
