Democrats’ Contrasting Views on Police Lethal Force Draw Criticism

Democratic lawmakers are facing scrutiny for their seemingly contradictory positions on law enforcement’s use of lethal force, with critics pointing to stark differences in their reactions to recent federal immigration enforcement shootings compared to the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot.

Several prominent Democrats who condemned the recent shootings involving Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents in Minneapolis and Portland had previously defended the actions of Capitol Police officers during the January 6 riot, particularly in the case of Ashli Babbitt.

In Minneapolis last week, ICE agents fatally shot a woman, Renee Good, who was allegedly interfering with deportation efforts. In Portland, CBP agents shot an undocumented immigrant couple who, according to the Department of Homeland Security, were involved in criminal activity. Officials reported that the driver attempted to ram agents with their vehicle.

Democratic House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, who have criticized the recent immigration enforcement shootings, had previously condemned a multi-million dollar settlement awarded to Ashli Babbitt’s family, calling it a “slap in the face” and a “sickening message to police.” Babbitt was shot and killed by a Capitol Police officer as she and others attempted to breach the Speaker’s Lobby during the January 6 riot.

Representative Dan Goldman (D-NY) characterized the ICE actions in Minneapolis as “murder” on social media. Yet just days before, on the fifth anniversary of January 6, Goldman had reintroduced legislation to honor those who defended the Capitol during the riot.

Similarly, Representative Pramila Jayapal (D-WA), who has spoken about her proximity to Babbitt during the Capitol riot and criticized Republicans for not adequately honoring Capitol Police, described the recent federal immigration enforcement shooting as “outright murder” in comments to local media.

Representatives Jamie Raskin (D-MD) and Jason Crow (D-CO) also praised Capitol Police for their actions on January 6 while condemning the federal immigration enforcement shootings. Crow complained about Republican obstruction preventing a plaque honoring Capitol Police officers from being displayed, while simultaneously criticizing federal officials for the recent fatalities.

Representative Suzanne Bonamici (D-OR) demanded accountability for federal immigration officers involved in the Portland shooting, referring to those shot as “victims” despite reports they attempted to ram officers with their vehicle. After the Capitol riot, Bonamici regularly praised the “heroism” of Capitol Police and suggested they should receive Congressional Medals of Honor.

When asked to explain the apparent inconsistency, Raskin defended his position, stating that two different investigations had found the Babbitt shooting “entirely reasonable and appropriate.” He argued that the Minneapolis case involved a “37-year-old mother of three” who was shot “not while charging at the police but while trying to get away from them.”

Raskin also called for Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem to appear before lawmakers to answer questions about the Minnesota ICE shooting.

U.S. Border Patrol chief Mike Banks has criticized rhetoric from left-wing politicians, suggesting it emboldens people to take actions like ramming vehicles into federal immigration officials. “The rhetoric they are putting out. The constant lies they are putting out to their constituents – saying things like kidnapping, disappearing, it’s encouraging these people to continue violating the law. They are actually putting their constituents in danger,” Banks said.

The contrasting reactions have intensified the already polarized debate over law enforcement use of force in the United States, with each side accusing the other of applying inconsistent standards based on political motivations rather than legal principles.
