Progressive Democrats Call for Trump’s Impeachment Following Venezuela Operation

Several progressive Democrats are demanding President Donald Trump’s impeachment following his administration’s weekend military operation in Venezuela that resulted in the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife.

Rep. Delia Ramirez (D-Ill.), a member of the House “Squad,” expressed outrage on social media, comparing the situation to previous U.S. military interventions. “Many Americans woke up to a sick sense of déjà vu. Under the guise of liberty, an administration of warmongers has lied to justify an invasion and is dragging us into an illegal, endless war so they can extract resources and expand their wealth,” Ramirez posted on X.

She called for passage of Rep. Ilhan Omar’s War Powers Resolution, which aims to block Trump from carrying out further military action against Venezuela, adding that “Trump must be impeached.”

Rep. Dan Goldman (D-N.Y.), who faces a primary challenge from the left, issued a statement accusing Trump of constitutional violations. “This violation of the United States Constitution is an impeachable offense,” Goldman said, criticizing the administration for bypassing Congress and failing to provide lawmakers with “any satisfactory explanation” for what he termed a “war” with Venezuela.

Rep. April McClain Delaney (D-Md.) added to the chorus without specifically naming Trump, stating, “Let’s be clear, invading and running another country without a congressional declaration of war is an impeachable offense.” She suggested her Democratic caucus needs to “seriously deliberate” whether impeachment is the best strategic approach to address what she called “lawlessness.”

California Representative Eric Swalwell, who is currently running for governor in the Golden State, did not rule out supporting impeachment proceedings when questioned at a press conference, according to local media reports.

The calls for impeachment have extended beyond current officeholders to progressive candidates. Kat Abughazaleh, running for an open congressional seat in Illinois, posted on the Bluesky app, “I demand that Congress exercise its power, halt this conflict, and impeach this war criminal president.”

The White House has not yet responded to requests for comment on these impeachment demands.

The operation in Venezuela has created a sharp partisan divide in Washington. Most Republicans have defended the action as a successful move to remove a hostile dictator who has long been an adversary to both the United States and regional stability. GOP lawmakers have characterized the operation as a law enforcement action rather than a military operation, arguing this distinction eliminated any requirement to notify Congress beforehand.

Democrats, meanwhile, have largely condemned what they view as an illegal invasion of a sovereign nation that circumvented established U.S. laws requiring congressional approval for military interventions.

The controversy highlights longstanding tensions over war powers between the executive and legislative branches. The U.S. Constitution grants Congress the power to declare war, while the president serves as commander-in-chief of the armed forces—creating a deliberate separation of powers that has been tested throughout American history.

The capture of Maduro represents a significant development in U.S.-Venezuela relations, which have been strained for decades. Venezuela possesses the world’s largest proven oil reserves, and its political stability has major implications for regional security, migration patterns, and global energy markets.

As images circulate of Maduro in handcuffs at the Drug Enforcement Administration’s New York office, the political fallout in Washington continues to intensify along partisan lines, with progressive Democrats leading calls for the president’s impeachment.
