Federal agents conducted raids at multiple locations linked to Virginia State Senator L. Louise Lucas on Wednesday, creating a moment of political irony as the powerful Democrat’s past social media comments about “no one being above the law” have resurfaced amid the investigation.

The FBI executed court-authorized searches at ten locations associated with Lucas, including her Portsmouth office and a cannabis dispensary business she co-owns. Federal law enforcement sources confirmed the raids are part of an ongoing corruption probe and investigation into illegal marijuana sales.

Lucas, a key power broker in Virginia politics and close ally of Democratic Governor Abigail Spanberger, has become known for her outspoken social media presence, often featuring pointed political commentary and occasionally colorful language. In 2023, following legal challenges against former President Donald Trump, Lucas posted that “Donald Trump just learned no one is above the law!”

That comment has now become fodder for critics following the FBI raids. Conservative social media accounts quickly repurposed her words, with the popular account Libs of TikTok posting, “Louise Lucas just learned no one is above the law!” Other critics referenced Lucas’ 2022 post about the FBI search at Mar-a-Lago, in which she wrote, “I want to see voters showing the kind of overwhelming numbers at the polls that the FBI showed today at Mar a Lago!”

Even Lucas’ campaign slogan has become material for critics. The state senator had championed a redistricting map that favors Democrats in Virginia with the catchphrase “Ten f—– one,” referring to the likely outcome of ten Democratic congressional districts to just one Republican district. Former Virginia legislator Nick Freitas mockingly posted, “@SenLouiseLucas: ’10 to f-ing 1′ FBI: ‘How about 10 to f-ing life.'”

Despite the controversy, Lucas has received support from some quarters. Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas (no relation) defended her on social media, writing, “They need to leave Louise Lucas alone.” Virginia House Speaker Don Scott, a Democrat, expressed concern about the raids and suggested political motivation might be at play.

“Given the politicization of this administration — an FBI led by Kash Patel and a Justice Department run by President Donald Trump’s former personal attorney — I think people should take this with a grain of salt and allow the facts to come out before jumping to a conclusion,” Scott stated.

However, a federal law enforcement source familiar with the case clarified that the corruption probe was actually initiated during the Biden administration, countering suggestions of political targeting by the Trump Justice Department.

Virginia Republican Delegate Tim Anderson, who was previously sued by Lucas for defamation in a case that was ultimately dismissed, took a measured approach, writing, “What they have or don’t have on Senator Lucas will be something for the courts to work through if the DOJ initiates criminal charges.”

Governor Spanberger has acknowledged awareness of the law enforcement operation but declined further comment, noting through a spokesperson that “in the absence of additional details, the governor will not be commenting on a federal investigation at this time.”

Virginia’s Democratic Attorney General Jay Jones also weighed in with skepticism about the investigation, saying in a statement that “we simply do not have sufficient information about the reported FBI activity in Portsmouth. However, several previous actions of the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Virginia have undermined public confidence in that office.”

Lucas has been a significant figure in Virginia politics for years and is known as a staunch advocate for Democratic causes. The outcome of this federal investigation could have substantial implications not only for her political future but also for power dynamics within Virginia’s Democratic Party, where she has wielded considerable influence as a senior legislator and close ally of the governor.

As of publication, Lucas had not responded to requests for comment regarding the FBI raids or the investigation.
