California Representative Faces Criticism for Hosting Controversial Muslim Advocacy Group
California Democratic Representative Derek Tran has drawn sharp criticism after welcoming leaders from the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) to his Capitol Hill office last week as part of the annual “National Muslim Advocacy Day.”
The meeting has sparked controversy due to CAIR’s recent designation as a terrorist organization by Texas and Florida, with both states accusing the group of supporting funding for Hamas. CAIR, which describes itself as the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights organization, has filed defamation lawsuits against Governors Greg Abbott and Ron DeSantis in response to these designations.
Among the attendees was Hussam Ayloush, executive director of CAIR’s Los Angeles chapter, who has previously made controversial statements regarding Israel. Following the October 7 Hamas attack on Israel, Ayloush publicly stated that it was a “myth” that Israel has the right to defend itself.
“An occupier never has the right to defend itself,” Ayloush said at a 2023 event at the Islamic Society of Orange County. “The only ones who have the right to defend themselves are the occupied, in this case, the Palestinian people.” He further remarked that “Israel should be attacked” and that “every means according to international law to defend and resist the occupation is within your hand.”
Rep. Tran, who represents parts of Orange County and Los Angeles County, shared his support for the meeting on social media, stating he was “proud to welcome folks from the Council on American-Islamic Relations for an important conversation about fighting Islamophobia and defending civil rights for every member of our community.” The post quickly garnered negative responses, with one user commenting, “Literally hosting terrorists.”
The relationship between Tran and CAIR predates this meeting. CAIR has previously stated that it helped amplify Tran’s 2024 congressional campaign, which resulted in his narrow victory over Republican incumbent Michelle Steel. Ayloush expressed his support for the freshman congressman on social media, noting that “In a short time, Rep. Derek Tran has earned the respect of many in his district.”
CAIR has long faced accusations of taking anti-Israel positions, particularly following the October 7 Hamas attack. The organization’s national executive director, Nihad Awad, reportedly made controversial statements at an American Muslims for Palestine convention, saying, “I was happy to see the people of Gaza break the siege on October 7. They were victorious. The people of Gaza have the right to self-defense. Israel does not.”
The controversy surrounding CAIR extends back to 2007, when the organization was named an unindicted co-conspirator in the Holy Land Foundation (HLF) trial. In that case, five members of the HLF were convicted of conspiracy to funnel $12.4 million to Hamas in the early 2000s.
This meeting comes amid heightened tensions across the United States regarding the ongoing conflict in Gaza, with protests occurring on college campuses nationwide and deepening political divisions over America’s support for Israel. Congressional representatives have faced increased scrutiny over their positions on the conflict and their associations with groups perceived as taking strong stances on either side.
The incident highlights the complex political landscape facing freshman representatives in swing districts, where relationships with community organizations can sometimes carry unexpected political consequences. Tran’s district, which straddles Orange and Los Angeles counties, represents one of the more politically competitive regions in California.
Neither Rep. Tran’s office nor CAIR has issued additional statements addressing the backlash to their meeting.
