Tina Shah, an emergency room physician and former Biden administration official, described supporting transgender healthcare for children as “a no-brainer” in video footage recently made public.

The National Republican Congressional Committee quickly seized on Shah’s statements, with spokeswoman Maureen O’Toole claiming, “Radical Democrat Tina Shah said it loud and clear: She’d be a vote for radical policies like sex changes for minors and taxpayer-funded drag queens. Shah is completely out of step with Garden State families.”
Shah’s campaign has not yet responded to requests for comment on the matter.
The race for New Jersey’s 7th Congressional District is considered among the most competitive House contests in the upcoming midterm elections. The nonpartisan Cook Political Report currently rates Kean’s re-election bid as a “toss-up,” having downgraded Republican prospects after Democratic Governor Mikie Sherrill carried the swing district by a narrow two-point margin last year.
Shah is one of four well-financed Democrats vying for the party’s nomination ahead of the June primary. Recent Federal Election Commission filings show Shah entered April with nearly $1.4 million in campaign funds. Fellow Democratic contenders Navy veteran Rebecca Bennett and businessman Brian Valera have reported similar fundraising figures. However, incumbent Kean holds a substantial financial advantage with approximately $3.4 million cash on hand.

Adding another dimension to the race is Kean’s extended absence from Congress due to unspecified health issues. According to GovTrack, a congressional monitoring website, Kean has missed 52 roll call votes in the House since mid-March, amounting to a 100% absence rate during that period.
“My doctors continue to assure me that my recovery will be complete and that I will be back to the job I love very soon,” Kean said in a statement last week. “I expect to return to a full schedule and be at 100 percent.”
