Progressive Democrat Defends Association with Controversial Streamer Amid Party Backlash
A progressive Democratic candidate vying for a key New York swing district has sparked controversy within her own party after appearing on far-left streamer Hasan Piker’s platform, where she made contentious statements about Israel.
Effie Phillips-Staley, who is seeking the Democratic nomination to challenge Republican Rep. Mike Lawler in New York’s 17th Congressional District, faced immediate backlash from Democratic county chairs within the district. In a joint statement, they condemned her participation in what they characterized as the “normalization of antisemitic, racist and misogynist rhetoric.”
During her March appearance on Piker’s livestream, which reaches nearly 3 million followers, Phillips-Staley referred to Israel as an “apartheid state” and accused the nation of genocide in Gaza. Despite criticism, she has doubled down on her decision to engage with Piker’s platform.
“While I don’t align with every word Hasan Piker has ever said, we recognize the massive value of a platform that engages millions of young people in the Democratic process,” Phillips-Staley told Fox News Digital. “As Democrats, our job is to build bridges, not burn them.”
Piker, 34, has a history of controversial statements, including once saying that “America deserved 9/11” – a remark he later described as “inappropriate.” He has faced accusations of antisemitism after calling some Orthodox Jews “inbred” and describing a listener who criticized Hamas’ October 7 attacks as a “bloodthirsty violent pig dog.” Piker has denied antisemitism charges while maintaining that Hamas is “a thousand times better” than Israel.
Phillips-Staley, who is endorsed by the left-wing Working Families Party and former progressive Rep. Jamaal Bowman, has largely defended Piker. She argued that critics have taken his remarks out of context and that he is “on the right side of history” regarding Israel and Palestine.
Republicans have seized on the controversy. Ciro Riccardi, a campaign spokesman for Rep. Lawler, condemned Phillips-Staley’s defense of Piker, saying, “Embracing an antisemite who praised the 9/11 attacks and sympathizes with terrorists is no longer disqualifying in the modern Democratic Party, and Effie Phillips-Staley is proving that in real time.”
The Republican campaign also criticized Phillips-Staley’s Democratic primary opponents – former Biden administration national security official Cait Conley and Rockland County legislator Beth Davidson – for not more forcefully condemning her appearance on Piker’s livestream. Both Conley and Davidson have expressed support for Israel, with Conley backed by the pro-Israel group Democratic Majority for Israel PAC.
Phillips-Staley’s alignment with Piker reflects a growing trend among progressive Democrats. Representatives Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ro Khanna, and New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani have all been interviewed by Piker. He also recently headlined a campaign event for Senator Bernie Sanders’ preferred Michigan Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed.
However, the embrace of Piker has divided Democratic ranks. Several prominent Democratic lawmakers, including Senators Elissa Slotkin and Cory Booker, have distanced themselves from the controversial streamer, citing concerns about his past statements.
Phillips-Staley maintains that her anti-Israel stance represents the path to victory in November. “Advancing someone who is so close on this issue to Mike Lawler would be a genuine mistake when this is something that the overwhelming majorities of the Democratic party’s base are demanding a separation from,” she told Piker.
Recent polling suggests shifting attitudes among Democratic voters regarding Israel. According to a March NBC News survey, only 13% of Democrats hold a positive view of Israel compared to 57% who view the country negatively. Among independents, just over 20% see Israel in a positive light.
It remains unclear if Phillips-Staley’s approach will resonate in New York’s 17th District, which is one of the most heavily Jewish districts in the country. “I’ve taken a very… what I hope that people perceive to be an authentic and progressive human rights-focused platform and we’re going to test it here too,” she told the Breaking Points podcast.
The race has additional complications. On Tuesday, Lawler’s campaign filed a lawsuit alleging the Phillips-Staley campaign forged voter signatures on petitions to qualify for New York’s June primary. The lawsuit includes dozens of sworn affidavits from district voters who claim they never signed petitions submitted by her campaign.
Lawler successfully defended his seat against Democratic Rep. Mondaire Jones in 2024. The nonpartisan Cook Political Report currently rates his reelection contest as a “toss-up.”
