New Jersey Democratic congressional candidate Rebecca Bennett faced scrutiny this week after a video showed her walking away from questions about political violence against former President Donald Trump, while an associate repeatedly told the questioner to “get a life.”

The video, which has been circulating on social media after being shared by the Libs of TikTok account, captures a confrontation where a man approaches Bennett asking, “Do you think that people should stop trying to kill the president?” Bennett remains silent throughout the exchange, continuing to walk away as a woman accompanying her attempts to drown out the questioner by singing.

“Oh my God. Dude, get a life. Get a life, dude,” the woman with Bennett can be heard saying as the candidate heads toward a vehicle.

In response to the incident, Bennett’s campaign told reporters that she “has and always will condemn political violence against President Trump.” The campaign pointed to a statement Bennett posted on social media following the assassination attempt at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner in April.

“Last night’s attack at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner was an act of political violence, and I condemn it unequivocally,” Bennett wrote on April 26. “Political violence has no place in our democracy. I’m grateful to the Secret Service agents and law enforcement officers who responded with extraordinary courage.”

The incident comes at a sensitive time in American politics, with heightened concerns about political violence following two assassination attempts against the former president this year. Security protocols around both major party candidates have been significantly enhanced, and rhetoric around political violence has become a focal point in campaign discourse.

Bennett, a Navy veteran and current member of the Air National Guard, has positioned herself as a moderate Democrat in her campaign to unseat Republican incumbent Thomas Kean Jr. in New Jersey’s 7th Congressional District, which leans toward Trump. The race is considered one of several battleground contests that could determine control of the House of Representatives in the upcoming election.

However, Bennett’s moderate positioning has come under scrutiny. A review of her social media history revealed numerous deleted posts that suggest more progressive leanings, including praise for Senator Elizabeth Warren, whom she described as “Love her” in a now-deleted 2019 post. She also reportedly removed posts praising Vice President Kamala Harris after Harris was announced as Joe Biden’s running mate in 2020.

Additionally, during the 2020 civil unrest following George Floyd’s death, Bennett expressed agreement with former Obama campaign strategist David Plouffe’s calls for investigations into law enforcement responses, another post that has since been deleted from her account.

Political analysts note that Bennett’s strategy of presenting a moderate image while running in a Trump-leaning district reflects the delicate balancing act many Democratic candidates face in competitive districts. Democrats need to flip several Republican-held seats to regain control of the House, making races like New Jersey’s 7th District particularly important.

The incident highlights the increasingly charged nature of political discourse in the United States, where candidates’ responses to questions about political violence can quickly become campaign flashpoints. It also underscores the challenges candidates face in navigating highly polarized environments where interactions with the public can be unpredictable and potentially damaging to campaign messaging.

As the election approaches, Bennett and other candidates in swing districts will likely face continued scrutiny over their positions on contentious issues and their past statements on social media platforms.
