In a rare display of intraparty conflict, tensions erupted on the House floor Wednesday night when Rep. Marie Gluesenkamp Perez, D-Wash., publicly accused fellow Democrat Rep. Jesús “Chuy” García, D-Ill., of undermining democratic principles through his handling of his re-election plans.

According to Gluesenkamp Perez’s resolution, García initially filed nomination petitions to appear on the Democratic primary ballot for March 2026. “Whereas on November 6, after the filing deadline, Representative Garcia confirmed that he would not be seeking another term in 2026 and would be withdrawing his nomination petitions,” Gluesenkamp Perez stated on the House floor. She further alleged that the congressman’s chief of staff was “the only Democrat who filed to run in the primary at the direction of Representative Garcia, undermining the process of a free and fair election.”

The moderate Democrat from Washington concluded that “García’s actions are beneath the dignity of his office and incompatible with the spirit of the Constitution.”

The timing of events has raised questions about whether García deliberately orchestrated a scenario where his chief of staff would face minimal primary competition. By filing his own paperwork and then withdrawing after the deadline, potential challengers had no opportunity to enter the race.

Patty García officially launched her campaign for the House seat on Wednesday, positioning herself as the presumptive Democratic nominee in Illinois’ heavily Democratic 4th Congressional District, which includes parts of Chicago and its suburbs.

When announcing his decision not to seek re-election, Rep. García cited health concerns and a desire to spend more time with his grandchildren. His office did not immediately respond to requests for comment regarding the allegations made by Gluesenkamp Perez.

The procedural mechanism used by Gluesenkamp Perez—a “privileged resolution”—requires the House to consider the matter within two legislative days, potentially forcing a full chamber vote on condemning García as soon as next week unless the resolution is withdrawn.
