Crime Wave Tests Scranton Mayor as She Challenges GOP Incumbent in Crucial Swing District
Scranton Mayor Paige Cognetti finds herself at the center of a heated political battle, defending her record on public safety as she campaigns to unseat freshman Republican Congressman Rob Bresnahan Jr. in Pennsylvania’s closely contested 8th Congressional District.
The former hometown of President Joe Biden has experienced a troubling surge in violent crime, with five homicides recorded in just the first half of 2024 – surpassing the total for all of 2023. The city also saw a police officer shot in the head, though the officer survived the attack.
This uptick in violence comes at a politically sensitive time, as Pennsylvania once again emerges as a crucial battleground state. The Commonwealth features at least three congressional districts rated as evenly divided along partisan lines or within one percentage point in either party’s favor.
During a recent mayoral debate, Cognetti was pressed on crime statistics reported in the New York Post. She dismissed the publication as “not a crime database,” encouraging voters to “go to the actual crime database” where she claimed they would see “crime is in fact not spiking in the City of Scranton.”
However, local residents have expressed growing concerns about public safety. The New York Post documented gang-related shootings, a student discovered with a firearm outside Scranton High School, SWAT responses to domestic disturbances, and a particularly alarming incident where scholastic lacrosse players required police escorts to their vehicles after gunfire erupted nearby.
In an interview with Scranton’s ABC affiliate earlier this year, Cognetti acknowledged the city’s crime situation was “really tough to swallow.” When confronted with the interviewer’s assessment that the homicide rate was “much higher than the past several years combined — much of it incited by gang violence,” the mayor conceded these were “stark numbers” but added they remained “relatively low compared to unfortunately what some cities suffer.”
Cognetti’s record on law enforcement has drawn additional scrutiny after comments from a 2020 interview with the Black Scranton Project resurfaced. During that conversation, she expressed a desire to eventually reach a point where police officers would not need to carry firearms.
“I do want to get to a point where we don’t have to worry about any officers having holsters or guns in them. That is ideally where we get in our whole country,” she said, referencing her time living in Japan as a model. She did acknowledge law-abiding gun owners, including her brother who hunts near Glacier National Park.
Pushing back against criticism, Cognetti’s spokesperson told Fox News Digital that under her leadership, “violent crime has gone down and Scranton has invested millions of dollars in the city’s police department.” The spokesperson highlighted Cognetti’s efforts to expand the police force, add 51 new technologically-equipped police vehicles, and deploy hundreds of citywide surveillance cameras.
“In Congress, Paige will continue to stand with our brave law enforcement officers and fight for more funding for local police across Northeastern Pennsylvania,” the spokesperson added.
Bresnahan’s campaign has seized on the crime issue. Campaign manager Peter Brath said Cognetti “has repeatedly shown a stunning disregard for the safety of her constituents, including the very law enforcement officers sworn to protect them.” Brath also criticized the mayor for allegedly “partying in New York City just days after the brutal machete murders of two women and a service dog devastated the community.”
Despite the political crossfire, Cognetti’s administration has made tangible investments in public safety infrastructure. The city reportedly received approximately 50 new police vehicles equipped with AI-driven computer systems during her tenure. Additional upgrades include live-feed body cameras, dashboard camera improvements, and the installation of more than 230 CCTV cameras throughout Scranton to enhance response capabilities.
The outcome of this closely contested race could hinge on voters’ perception of public safety in Scranton and surrounding communities, with both candidates positioning themselves as the stronger advocate for law enforcement and crime reduction in this pivotal Pennsylvania district.
