Texas Senate Candidate Under Fire for Anti-Meat Comments

Democratic Texas Senate candidate James Talarico has ignited a firestorm of criticism following the emergence of a 2022 video in which he urged Texans to reduce meat consumption to combat climate change.

The three-term state legislator, who recently defeated Rep. Jasmine Crockett in the Democratic primary, now faces mounting pressure as he campaigns to unseat incumbent Republican Senator John Cornyn in a state where beef production is a cornerstone of both the economy and cultural identity.

“We have heard more and more issues of animal welfare,” Talarico said in the resurfaced video, wearing a mask while addressing the Texas Humane Legislation Network. “I think, not just because it’s the right thing to do and the moral thing to do, but also, it’s necessary to fight climate change. It is now existential that we try to reduce our meat consumption and that we try to respect animals in all aspects of society.”

In the same speech, Talarico announced that his campaign had “officially become a non-meat campaign,” purchasing only vegan products from local vegan businesses.

The comments have drawn sharp rebukes from Republicans, who see the stance as politically suicidal in Texas, where cattle ranching represents the state’s top agricultural commodity with an economic impact exceeding $10 billion annually.

“Democrats are trying to fool Texans into believing James Talarico isn’t some whacked out lib, but the clips keep coming,” said Andrew Kolvet, spokesman for Turning Point USA. “This is TEXAS. This will haunt him in the general.”

The National Republican Senatorial Committee pointedly asked on social media: “Who wants to tell him that cattle is the #1 commodity in Texas?” Meanwhile, Senator Cornyn responded with a pun, writing: “Vote Republican this November. The steaks couldn’t be higher.”

Senator Ted Cruz took a more direct approach, labeling Talarico a “freak” who wants to “ban BBQ” – a serious accusation in a state that prides itself on its barbecue culture.

Facing mounting criticism, Talarico’s campaign attempted damage control by posting a photo of the candidate wearing a Texas flag shirt while taking a large bite from a turkey leg. The image was captioned: “Official Statement from James Talarico on Vegan Accusations.”

The anti-meat controversy adds to a growing list of past statements that Republicans have highlighted as out of step with Texas voters. In 2021, Talarico claimed “God is non-binary” during a legislative debate on transgender athletes, a position he recently defended as “provocative” but “theologically correct” in an interview with The Bulwark.

That same year, Talarico dismissed concerns about biological males competing in women’s sports as “far-right conspiracy theories.” In a 2023 podcast appearance, when asked about something he loves besides family and friends, the candidate notably discussed “trans children.”

Despite these potential liabilities in a traditionally conservative state, Talarico remains optimistic about his chances. His campaign recently released an internal poll claiming he leads both Senator Cornyn and Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, who is mounting a primary challenge against Cornyn, in hypothetical head-to-head matchups.

The political stakes are considerable. Democrats have not won a Senate seat in Texas since the 1980s, and Talarico’s campaign represents their latest effort to flip the reliably red state. Whether his progressive positions on issues like meat consumption and gender identity will help or hinder that quest remains to be seen in a state with deep agricultural roots and traditionally conservative values.

This is a divisive issue, and the candidate’s comments will likely be used against him by political opponents. Discussing climate and animal welfare is important, but the approach needs to be more nuanced.

  2. William Rodriguez on

I’m curious to hear more about the candidate’s reasoning and proposed solutions. Climate change is a serious concern, but any policies need to balance environmental goals with economic and cultural realities in Texas.

    • Oliver Jackson on

Good point. The candidate should engage constructively with the beef industry and listen to their perspectives before pushing for drastic changes.

  3. William Thompson on

This is a sensitive and complex issue. While reducing meat consumption may have environmental benefits, it’s a personal choice that should be respected. The candidate’s remarks could alienate many Texan voters who value the state’s beef industry.

    • Agreed, the candidate should tread carefully on this topic. Overly forceful rhetoric against meat-eating may backfire politically.
