West Virginia communities are mourning the loss of one National Guard member and praying for the recovery of another following a shooting in Washington, D.C., that has shocked the state and drawn national attention.
U.S. Army Specialist Sarah Beckstrom, 20, died from injuries sustained in Wednesday’s attack, while U.S. Air Force Staff Sergeant Andrew Wolfe, 24, remains hospitalized in what Governor Patrick Morrisey described Friday as “very critical condition.”
The two West Virginia natives were deployed to the nation’s capital as part of Operation D.C. Safe and Beautiful, an initiative aimed at enhancing public safety in Washington. Their shooting has prompted an outpouring of grief and support across the Mountain State.
“These two West Virginia heroes were serving our country and protecting our nation’s capital when they were maliciously attacked,” Governor Morrisey said. “Their courage and commitment to duty represent the very best of our state.”
On Friday, Morrisey issued a proclamation calling for a statewide moment of silence or prayer to honor the two service members. He also ordered flags to be flown at half-staff in recognition of Beckstrom’s death.
The tragedy has particularly affected Webster Springs, where Beckstrom graduated with honors from Webster County High School in June 2023. Just weeks after graduation, she joined the National Guard and served as a military police officer with the 863rd Military Police Company.
On Thanksgiving night, dozens of community members gathered at a veterans memorial wall in Webster Springs for a candlelight vigil shortly after news of Beckstrom’s death was announced.
“She exemplified leadership, dedication, and professionalism,” the West Virginia National Guard said in a statement, noting that Beckstrom had voluntarily deployed to Washington, D.C., to help ensure the capital’s safety and security.
Former classmates remember Beckstrom as someone who surprised them by transitioning from a “girly girl” to a dedicated service member, attributing this transformation to her compassionate nature and desire to help others. Beckstrom had been stationed in Washington since early August.
Adam Carr, her former boyfriend, told The New York Times that while she wasn’t initially enthusiastic about the deployment, Beckstrom grew to appreciate the opportunity to assist people and explore historical sites and museums in the capital.
“As long as she was with people who cared about her, she was having a good time,” Carr told the newspaper.
After high school, Beckstrom worked in Summersville as a community engagement specialist at a clinic providing services for young people with mental illnesses, substance abuse problems, and developmental disabilities. Summersville Mayor Robert Shafter announced plans for a separate candlelight vigil on Saturday to honor her memory.
Meanwhile, Berkeley County Sheriff Rob Blair shared that Sergeant Jason Wolfe and his wife, Melody, have expressed gratitude for the public’s prayers for their son, Andy, and requested continued support during this difficult time.
Andrew Wolfe, who serves with the 167th Force Support Squadron, has worked as a lineman with Frontier Communications since early 2023. The company praised his contributions on Friday.
“He is a valuable member of our team, working hard to bring high-speed fiber internet to homes and businesses so everyone can stay connected to essential services and fully participate in the digital economy,” Frontier Communications stated. “We’re grateful for Andrew’s dedication—to our nation, to West Virginia and to the communities he helps keep connected.”
Berkeley County schools confirmed that Wolfe graduated from Musselman High School in 2019. Principal Alicia Riggleman described him as an engaged, high-achieving student “who embodied the Applemen spirit, contributing positively to our school community both academically and athletically.”
President Donald Trump joined the chorus of tributes, calling Beckstrom an “incredible person, outstanding in every single way.”
The attack on these National Guard members has not only devastated their families and communities but has also highlighted the risks faced by military personnel even when deployed for public safety missions on domestic soil.
