Former FBI Director James Comey expressed relief Monday after a federal judge dismissed false statements charges against him, characterizing the prosecution as a product of “malevolence and incompetence” and a troubling reflection of the Department of Justice under President Donald Trump’s administration.

“I’m grateful that the court ended the case against me,” Comey stated following Judge Cameron Currie’s ruling, which found that the charges were brought by an improperly appointed U.S. attorney. “It matters most because a message has to be sent. That the president of the United States cannot use the Department of Justice to target his political enemies.”

Judge Currie, a Clinton appointee brought in from South Carolina to avoid conflicts of interest among Virginia judges, ruled that Lindsey Halligan was invalidly installed as Interim U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia. The same ruling also dismissed the federal case against New York Attorney General Letitia James on identical grounds.

“I conclude that the Attorney General’s attempt to install Ms. Halligan as Interim U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia was invalid and that Ms. Halligan has been unlawfully serving in that role since September 22, 2025,” Judge Currie wrote in her decision.

The dismissals represent a significant setback for the Trump administration, which has sought to pursue legal action against several perceived political adversaries since returning to office. The Justice Department under Attorney General Pam Bondi has indicated it plans to continue pursuing the cases despite this legal obstacle.

Halligan’s appointment came after Trump removed the previous interim U.S. attorney, Erik Siebert, and directed Bondi to replace him with Halligan, a former White House aide and insurance lawyer. According to Currie’s ruling, this appointment violated proper procedure, as the interim term had already expired under Siebert, making Virginia judges responsible for appointing a temporary U.S. attorney until a Senate-confirmed replacement could be installed.

The controversy surrounding these prosecutions highlights ongoing tensions between the Trump administration and the federal judiciary. Comey suggested the administration would continue targeting him despite this legal defeat, urging Americans to “stand up” against what he characterized as intimidation tactics from a “would-be tyrant.”

This case is part of a broader pattern of judicial pushback against the administration’s Justice Department appointments. Federal judges have recently disqualified Trump-appointed U.S. attorneys in California, New Jersey, and Nevada on similar grounds. These judicial interventions come as Trump has struggled to secure Senate confirmation for his preferred U.S. attorney nominees in Democratic-leaning states, prompting attempts to bypass the traditional confirmation process.

The charges against Comey centered on alleged false statements, though specific details of the allegations were not fully elaborated in court documents. The former FBI director, who has had a contentious relationship with Trump since his 2017 firing during Trump’s first term, characterized the case as an example of political retribution rather than legitimate law enforcement.

Legal experts suggest the ruling could have implications for other federal prosecutions initiated under questionably appointed U.S. attorneys. The administration must now decide whether to appeal the ruling, restart the cases with properly appointed prosecutors, or abandon the prosecutions entirely.

As the situation develops, the dismissals highlight fundamental questions about the independence of the Justice Department and the proper boundaries between presidential authority and the rule of law. Comey emphasized this point in his statement, saying, “I don’t care what your politics are. You have to see that as fundamentally un-American and a threat to the rule of law that keeps all of us free.”

The Trump administration has not yet announced its specific next steps in response to Judge Currie’s ruling.
