In a sharp escalation of partisan tensions, House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer has accused Democratic committee members of deliberately misrepresenting information related to Jeffrey Epstein’s private compound in the U.S. Virgin Islands.
The controversy erupted after committee Democrats released what they described as “never-before-seen” photos and videos of Epstein’s island estate, Little Saint James. Comer quickly challenged this characterization, claiming many of these images had already been published by James O’Keefe, founder of Project Veritas and current head of O’Keefe Media Group.
“Ranking Member Robert Garcia and Democrats on the Oversight Committee continue to embarrass themselves,” Comer said in a statement Wednesday. “Throughout the course of our investigation, Democrats have cherry-picked documents and doctored some of them, and now they are chasing headlines by slapping ‘never-before-seen’ on images and video that were reported by O’Keefe Media Group months ago.”
The images in question include disturbing glimpses into Epstein’s private world, such as a room with a dentist’s chair and a chalkboard with words like “power,” “deception,” and “appear” written on it. O’Keefe himself joined the fray, accusing Democrats of publishing redacted versions of photos he had previously released without such redactions.
Shortly after being contacted for comment by reporters, Oversight Democrats released an additional 150-plus photos and videos from Epstein’s island. This new batch included images of framed photographs showing Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell meeting the Pope, artwork including a lamp with a base resembling a naked woman’s torso, and what appears to be a security monitoring system.
Ranking Member Robert Garcia defended the releases, stating, “These new images are a disturbing look into the world of Jeffrey Epstein and his island. We are releasing these photos and videos to ensure public transparency in our investigation and to help piece together the full picture of Epstein’s horrific crimes.”
The dispute reflects deeper tensions surrounding the committee’s investigation into Epstein, the financier who died by suicide in 2019 while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges. His case has remained politically charged due to his connections with numerous high-profile individuals across the political spectrum.
A spokesperson for the Republican majority on the Oversight Committee said the panel has received approximately 5,000 documents in response to Chairman Comer’s subpoenas to J.P. Morgan, Deutsche Bank, and his request to the U.S. Virgin Islands authorities. The majority promised to release these materials soon, while criticizing Democrats for what they described as selective disclosure of information.
“The Majority is reviewing these materials and will make them public soon, just as the Committee has already done with the more than 65,000 pages produced during this investigation,” the spokesperson said. “It is odd that Democrats are once again releasing selective information, as they have done before.”
Comer has previously released thousands of pages of documents related to the committee’s Epstein investigation. Democrats have accused him of protecting former President Donald Trump, who was previously acquainted with Epstein but has denied any knowledge of or involvement in Epstein’s criminal activities. Republicans counter that Democrats are attempting to sabotage a bipartisan investigation to construct a narrative implicating Trump.
The Epstein case continues to be a lightning rod for partisan conflict, reflecting broader tensions within Congress. The deceased financier’s extensive connections to powerful figures in business, politics, and entertainment have fueled ongoing speculation and investigations, with both parties accusing the other of manipulating information for political gain.
As the committee continues its work, the dispute over these images highlights the challenges of conducting politically sensitive investigations in an increasingly polarized Congress, where even evidence collection and presentation have become battlegrounds for partisan messaging.
