Christian Leaders Condemn Anti-ICE Protesters Who Disrupted Twin Cities Church Service

Christian leaders across the nation have voiced outrage after anti-ICE protesters stormed Cities Church in St. Paul, Minnesota during Sunday services, demanding immediate action from federal authorities to protect religious liberty.

The incident, which was documented by former CNN host Don Lemon who followed the protesters, showed demonstrators shouting at congregants, creating significant disruption during worship. The protest has triggered calls for prosecution under the Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances (FACE) Act, which prohibits interference with religious worship.

Paula Michelle White, senior adviser to the White House Faith Office, issued a strong condemnation through the National Faith Advisory Board: “We condemn the actions of Don Lemon and the group of activists who stormed Cities Church today in St. Paul, Minnesota, in clear violation of the FACE Act. Christians everywhere should demand that the Department of Justice arrest those who participated. We must protect religious liberty in this country.”

Pastor Paul Chappell of Lancaster Baptist Church in California echoed these sentiments, calling on the Department of Justice to “apprehend those who broke the law” and launch a full investigation.

Albert Mohler, president of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, described the disruption as “unspeakably evil” and urged swift federal response. “This was nothing less than the desecration of Christian worship,” Mohler stated, noting the trauma experienced by churchgoers, including children and youth.

The protest comes amid heightened tensions over immigration enforcement policies. Video footage of the incident shows dozens of protesters entering the church, disrupting the service, and confronting congregation members.

Pastor Steve Gentry of Village Church in Virginia characterized the incident as “a despicable act meant to terrorize and stoke fear in Christians,” adding, “This is what the Left is. They hate order and want to destroy the nation.”

The Trump administration has already responded to the incident with promises of federal investigation. Attorney General Pam Bondi stated she had personally spoken with the church’s pastor and assured that “attacks against law enforcement and the intimidation of Christians are being met with the full force of federal law.”

“If state leaders refuse to act responsibly to prevent lawlessness, this Department of Justice will remain mobilized to prosecute federal crimes and ensure that the rule of law prevails,” Bondi added.

Harmeet Dhillon, the assistant attorney general for civil rights, confirmed her department is “hard at work” investigating the incident, stating, “We will not rest until we are able to deliver justice.”

The Minnesota National Guard has reportedly been placed on standby to support law enforcement as protests in the region have turned violent in some instances.

This incident highlights growing concerns about the safety of religious institutions and the boundaries of protest activities. Legal experts note that while free speech protections are robust in the United States, they typically do not extend to disrupting religious services, especially when protesters enter private property.

The Department of Justice’s civil rights investigation will likely focus on whether the protesters violated federal law by intentionally obstructing religious freedom, which could carry significant penalties if prosecutions move forward.

Meanwhile, local faith communities have expressed solidarity with Cities Church as the congregation processes the disruption of what many consider sacred space.
