President Trump has criticized Chicago’s leadership following a weekend outbreak of violence in the city’s downtown area, claiming residents are calling for his intervention amid rising crime rates.

At least eight teenagers were shot, one fatally, during a riot that erupted in Chicago’s Loop district on Friday night. The violence broke out around 10 p.m. near State and Randolph streets, shortly after a Christmas tree lighting ceremony. According to City Alderman Brian Hopkins, approximately 300 juveniles participated in the disturbance, attacking police officers with mace and stun guns. Multiple officers were injured, with at least one requiring hospitalization.

“Massive crime and rioting in the Chicago Loop area. Multiple Police Officers attacked and badly injured. 300 people rioting, 6 victims shot, one critical and one DEAD,” Trump wrote Saturday in a post on his Truth Social platform. He added, “The people are chanting, BRING IN TRUMP!!!”

Among the shooting victims were six minors, including a 13-year-old, two 14-year-olds, a 15-year-old, a 16-year-old, and a 17-year-old. Less than an hour after the initial violence, another 14-year-old boy was shot and later died at the hospital. An 18-year-old man was also wounded in the incidents.

In his social media post, Trump criticized Illinois Governor JB Pritzker and Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson, claiming they are “refusing Federal Government help for a situation that could be quickly remedied.” The former president described the mayor as having a “Low IQ.”

The weekend violence follows another high-profile incident days earlier when a man allegedly set a woman on fire while riding a Chicago train. The suspect, Lawrence Reed, 50, has been charged with committing a terrorist attack against a mass transportation system. Court records revealed Reed had been arrested at least a dozen times since 2017 on charges including felony aggravated arson and multiple instances of battery.

Despite prosecutors’ request for detention, Reed had been released with an ankle monitor by a judge before the train attack. Mayor Johnson later characterized this incident as “isolated,” drawing criticism from law enforcement advocates and political opponents.

Chicago’s crime rates have been a focal point in national political discussions for years. Under Mayor Johnson’s administration, the city has faced scrutiny over its approach to public safety and criminal justice reform. Critics argue that lenient policies have contributed to increased violence, while supporters maintain that addressing root causes of crime requires social investment rather than increased policing.

The exchange highlights the ongoing tension between the federal government and Democratic-led cities regarding crime prevention strategies. Trump has repeatedly positioned himself as a law-and-order candidate, particularly targeting major urban centers with Democratic leadership.

Governor Pritzker and Mayor Johnson have not directly responded to Trump’s latest comments, though both have previously rejected his characterizations of Chicago and his offers of federal intervention. The city’s leadership has instead focused on community-based solutions and police reform measures to address violence.

As Chicago enters the holiday season, local officials face mounting pressure to ensure public safety in the downtown area, which is crucial to the city’s tourism and retail economies. The violence following the Christmas tree lighting ceremony represents a particular concern for businesses already struggling with perceptions of urban insecurity.
