President Trump has renewed his push to deploy National Guard troops to Chicago following a violent attack on a woman last week, igniting fresh debate over crime policies and judicial decisions in major urban centers.

Speaking during the annual Thanksgiving turkey pardon at the White House on Tuesday, Trump described crime in Chicago as “out of control” and criticized what he termed “liberal judges” after 26-year-old Bethany MaGee was allegedly set on fire on a train by Lawrence Reed, a 50-year-old man with 72 prior arrests.

“This is a very serious thing,” Trump said. “They burned this beautiful woman riding in a train. A man was arrested 72 times. Think of that. And they’ll let him out again, the liberal judges will let him out again.”

The incident has become a flashpoint in the ongoing national debate over criminal justice reform, with Reed’s extensive criminal history drawing particular scrutiny. According to court documents, Reed had been placed on electronic monitoring in August when Cook County Judge Teresa Molina-Gonzalez denied prosecutors’ requests to keep him jailed on felony charges related to an assault on a hospital worker.

During that hearing, Molina-Gonzalez reportedly told prosecutors, “I can’t keep everybody in jail because the State’s Attorney wants me to.” Records indicate Reed repeatedly violated his curfew and movement restrictions in the days before the attack on MaGee.

The assault occurred amid a weekend of violence in Chicago, including a fatal shooting of a teenager and injuries to at least eight others in two separate incidents in the downtown area on Friday night.

For months, Trump has attempted to send National Guard troops to Chicago, as he has done in Los Angeles, Washington, D.C., and Memphis, Tennessee, claiming these deployments have significantly reduced crime in those cities. He has even suggested invoking the Insurrection Act to address violence in Chicago.

“We’re ready to go,” Trump stated. “You know, we’ve been moving toward Chicago. We have a governor that thinks it’s wonderful that only like seven people were killed this week… It’s horrible what’s happening in Chicago.”

However, Illinois Governor JB Pritzker and Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson have consistently opposed such deployments, arguing they would be unconstitutional and rejecting the premise that the city faces the level of crime crisis described by the White House.

Trump countered that federal intervention would make Chicago “totally safe” within weeks. “The people of Chicago want us to go there,” he claimed. “The mayor is incompetent, and the governor is a big fat slob. He ought to invite us in and say, ‘please make Chicago safe.'”

Critics of Illinois’ progressive criminal justice policies point to the attack on MaGee as evidence that the system is failing to protect law-abiding citizens by repeatedly releasing career criminals. The White House echoed this sentiment in a statement released shortly before Trump’s remarks.

“Liberal soft-on-crime policies are FAILING American communities and endangering law-abiding citizens,” the White House posted on social media platform X. “A career criminal with 72 arrests should have never been free to roam the streets. Pray for Bethany.”

The incident has intensified scrutiny of bail reform and electronic monitoring programs in Cook County, which have been implemented as part of broader criminal justice reform efforts aimed at reducing pretrial detention and addressing racial disparities in the criminal justice system.

Trump’s comments highlight the sharp political divisions over public safety approaches in major American cities, with Republicans generally advocating stricter law enforcement measures and Democrats pushing for reforms to address systemic inequities while maintaining public safety.

As the debate continues, MaGee’s case has become emblematic of larger questions about the balance between criminal justice reform and public safety that continue to challenge policymakers at all levels of government.
