Chicago Immigration Agents Release Day Care Worker After Controversial Detention

A day care employee in Chicago who was detained by immigration agents while children were being dropped off last week has been released from custody, her attorney confirmed Thursday.

Diana Santillana Galeano, who works at the Rayito de Sol Spanish Immersion Early Learning Center on Chicago’s north side, was detained on November 5 during the morning drop-off period. Video footage that circulated after the incident showed officers struggling with Santillana Galeano as they escorted her through the front door of the facility.

“We are thrilled that Ms. Santillana was released, and has been able to return home to Chicago where she belongs,” said Charlie Wysong, her attorney, in a statement released Thursday. Santillana Galeano was freed Wednesday night from a detention center in Indiana where she had been held for eight days.

The Colombian national expressed gratitude for the community support she received during her detention. “I am so grateful to everyone who has advocated on my behalf, and on behalf of the countless others who have experienced similar trauma over recent months in the Chicago area,” Santillana Galeano said. “I love our community and the children I teach, and I can’t wait to see them again.”

Her attorneys plan to continue pursuing legal avenues for her to remain in the United States.

The Department of Homeland Security stated last week that Santillana Galeano entered the U.S. illegally in June 2023 but subsequently obtained work authorization under the Biden administration. Officials denied that the day care facility was specifically targeted in the operation.

Immigration policy experts note that this case exemplifies the increasingly aggressive enforcement tactics being deployed by federal immigration authorities following recent policy shifts. The detention at a child care facility during operating hours represents a particularly unusual escalation, even within the context of the current enforcement initiative dubbed “Operation Midway Blitz.”

This operation has resulted in more than 3,000 immigration arrests in the Chicago area since early September. Enforcement tactics have included heavily armed agents rappelling from Black Hawk helicopters during middle-of-the-night apartment building raids, overwhelming shows of force in recreational areas, and the deployment of tear gas during protests against these actions.

Community advocates and immigration rights organizations have expressed concern about the psychological impact such enforcement actions have on children who witness arrests, as well as the broader immigrant community. Several Chicago-based nonprofit organizations have reported increased anxiety and fear among immigrant families, with some parents hesitant to bring their children to schools or day care facilities.

Local officials have questioned the timing and methods of these operations, particularly those conducted at sensitive locations like educational facilities. Chicago has maintained its status as a sanctuary city, limiting cooperation between local law enforcement and federal immigration authorities.

Wysong requested privacy for his client as “she rests and recovers from this ordeal.” Meanwhile, immigrant advocacy groups continue to monitor enforcement actions across the Chicago metropolitan area, where significant immigrant communities have established themselves over decades.

The case highlights ongoing tensions in U.S. immigration policy, as enforcement priorities shift with changing administrations and approaches to undocumented residents who have established lives and employment in American communities.

Glad to hear the worker was released after the community got involved. Controversial immigration enforcement tactics like this can disrupt important community services and institutions.

    • Absolutely, this type of heavy-handed enforcement can have ripple effects far beyond the individual being detained. It’s crucial that we find more humane and constructive approaches.

  2. The release of this worker is certainly a positive outcome, but the broader context of immigration enforcement tactics in the Chicago area remains concerning. I hope this case sparks deeper discussion about balancing security needs with community well-being.

It’s good to see that the community rallied to support this day care worker and secure her release. Detaining undocumented immigrants going about their daily lives is a concerning practice that often causes unnecessary trauma.

This is a sensitive issue and I’m curious to learn more about the specific circumstances that led to the detention. Were there any particular concerns or policies that prompted the initial action by immigration agents?
