King Charles III to Meet New York Mayor Mamdani During Upcoming U.S. State Visit

King Charles III will meet with New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani during his upcoming state visit to the United States, Buckingham Palace confirmed Saturday. The British monarch and the mayor will attend a wreath-laying ceremony at the 9/11 memorial in New York City on Wednesday, honoring the 67 British citizens who lost their lives in the 2001 terrorist attacks.

The New York meeting forms part of a broader state visit scheduled for next week that includes stops in Washington D.C. and Virginia. The visit marks the first by a reigning British monarch since Queen Elizabeth II’s trip in 1991 and comes at a time of diplomatic tension between the U.S. and the U.K.

The royal itinerary begins Monday when King Charles and Queen Camilla arrive at Joint Base Andrews where they will receive a military arrival ceremony. The couple will then join President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump for a private tea at the White House.

“I know him well, I’ve known him for years. He’s a brave man, and he’s a great man,” President Trump told the BBC regarding the King’s visit, adding that it would “absolutely be a positive” for U.S.-U.K. relations.

Tuesday’s schedule includes a bilateral meeting between the King and President Trump, followed by what will be a historic address to Congress – the first by a British monarch since Queen Elizabeth II addressed U.S. lawmakers over three decades ago. The day will conclude with a state dinner at the White House, a traditional diplomatic highlight meant to reaffirm the special relationship between the two countries.

Mayor Mamdani’s office clarified the parameters of the New York meeting, with press secretary Joe Calvello stating: “The Mayor will not meet privately with King Charles. He was invited to join a number of New York elected officials next week at a wreath laying at the 9/11 memorial with members of the British royal family.”

The royal visit comes amid strained relations between the United States and Britain, particularly following Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s reluctance to join President Trump’s military action in Iran. President Trump has expressed hope that the King’s visit will ease these tensions, telling reporters he believes it will “absolutely” help improve diplomatic relations.

The state visit is particularly significant as it coincides with celebrations marking America’s 250th year of independence. On Thursday, following his New York engagements, King Charles will travel to Virginia where he will meet with indigenous and Appalachian cultural groups and attend a block party celebrating the sestercentennial.

This visit demonstrates the continuing importance of the “special relationship” between the United States and the United Kingdom, a diplomatic alliance that has weathered numerous global challenges since World War II. Royal visits have historically served as opportunities to reaffirm these ties during periods of political transition or international tension.

President Trump and King Charles have met previously, including during Trump’s state visit to Britain in September, which included a state dinner at Windsor Castle. Both leaders have expressed optimism that this reciprocal visit will strengthen bilateral relations at a time of global uncertainty.

The royal trip, carefully choreographed to include ceremonial events, diplomatic meetings, and cultural engagements, represents an opportunity for both nations to reset relations and demonstrate unity on the world stage, despite ongoing policy differences between the Trump administration and the Starmer government.
