Former Democratic Senator Sherrod Brown won his party’s 2026 Senate nomination in Ohio on Tuesday, setting up what promises to be a competitive race that could help determine control of the U.S. Senate, according to the Associated Press.
Brown, who served three decades in Congress before losing his seat in 2024 to Republican Bernie Moreno, will face Republican Senator Jon Husted in the November general election. Husted, Ohio’s former lieutenant governor, was appointed to the Senate seat vacated by JD Vance when he became vice president following the 2024 presidential election.
The winner of this closely watched contest will serve the remaining two years of Vance’s Senate term. Vance himself returned to Ohio on Tuesday morning to cast his ballot in the primary, stopping at a polling station in Cincinnati.
Brown easily defeated his lone primary challenger, Ron Kincaid, an IT professional and Special Olympics coach. Husted faced no opposition for the Republican nomination.
“Ohioans are fed up with the corruption and greed in Washington. They deserve a senator who fights for working families, not CEOs and billionaires,” Brown declared on social media after securing his primary victory. “That’s why we’re going to win this November.”
The Ohio race is one of a handful that will determine whether Republicans maintain their slim majority in the Senate. Currently, Republicans hold a 53-47 advantage in the chamber, making every competitive seat crucial for both parties.
Husted appears to be aligning himself closely with President Donald Trump, who remains popular in Ohio. After Trump praised the senator in a Truth Social post, Husted responded enthusiastically on social media: “Thanks President Trump! Your support for Ohio jobs means a lot to the hardworking people of our state. The Working Family Tax Cut is helping Ohio families keep more of what they earn so they can spend, save, and invest in their own priorities. America First! Ohio First!”
Ohio’s political landscape has shifted significantly over the past decade. Once considered a quintessential battleground state that could swing toward either party, it has moved increasingly to the right. Trump carried Ohio by 11 percentage points in the 2024 presidential election, solidifying the state’s recent Republican leanings.
Despite this rightward trend, political analysts expect both the Senate race and this year’s gubernatorial contest to be highly competitive. Brown has a long history of winning elections in Ohio even during Republican-leaning years, cultivating an image as a champion for working-class voters with his populist economic message and focus on labor issues.
The stakes for this race extend beyond Ohio’s borders. Democrats are eager to reclaim control of the Senate for the first time in four years, while Republicans are determined to defend their majority. Given the narrow margin in the chamber, a single seat could potentially tip the balance of power.
Husted enters the general election with significant advantages, including his current incumbency, name recognition from his time as lieutenant governor, and the state’s Republican tilt. He also recently announced endorsements from 75 Ohio sheriffs, including independents and a Democrat, showcasing bipartisan appeal.
Brown, however, brings his own strengths to the race, including decades of experience representing Ohio, a well-established political brand, and proven ability to win in difficult political environments.
The Ohio Senate contest is expected to draw substantial national attention and resources from both parties as the November election approaches, given its potential to influence which party controls the Senate for the final two years of the Trump-Vance administration.

Brown’s talk of going after corruption and greed in Washington is striking a chord, but he’ll need to back that up with concrete policy proposals. Voters will want to know how he plans to support Ohio’s mining, energy, and manufacturing sectors.
Good point. Brown will need to show he understands the concerns of Ohio’s industrial heartland, not just the coasts.
It will be interesting to see how Husted positions himself on issues like mining, energy, and manufacturing jobs. Those are crucial economic drivers in Ohio that both candidates will need to address.
Agreed. Voters in Ohio’s industrial regions will be closely watching how the candidates discuss those topics.
This race is shaping up to be a clash of political titans. Husted’s establishment credentials vs. Brown’s populist appeal. Should make for an intense and high-stakes battle for the Senate seat.
Interesting race in Ohio. Brown’s populist message could resonate with voters tired of D.C. insiders. But Husted has name recognition and establishment backing. Definitely one to watch as the Senate majority hangs in the balance.
I’m curious to see how Brown positions himself on issues like mining and energy. As an experienced Senator, he’ll need to find the right balance between appealing to working class voters and not alienating urban progressives.
Looks like Sherrod Brown is trying to make a comeback after his 2024 loss. The Senate race in Ohio will be a test of whether voters are willing to give him another chance. His rhetoric about fighting for the working class could resonate, but Husted has a strong conservative base.
