Booker Delivers Passionate Call for Democratic Unity at Michigan Convention
Sen. Cory Booker delivered an impassioned, revival-style address to the Michigan Democratic Convention, urging party members to become “foot soldiers for democracy” amid what he described as a storm sweeping across the nation.
The New Jersey Democrat spoke for approximately 25 minutes, often shifting into a poetic cadence as he addressed the crowd with increasing intensity. His appearance alongside former Vice President Kamala Harris and Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear has fueled speculation about potential contenders for the 2028 presidential race, as all three figures have been mentioned as possible candidates.
“Ladies and gentlemen, there is a storm in our nation,” Booker declared as he reached the climax of his speech. “There is darkness and wind. People are getting hurt. What we need is not from on high. We need foot soldiers of our democracy who in times of trial, are willing to stand up.”
Booker, who mounted an unsuccessful presidential campaign in 2020, took the opportunity to introduce himself to Michigan voters by sharing his political background and family connections to the state. His speech appeared designed to energize the Democratic base in Michigan, a critical battleground state where party unity could prove decisive in future elections.
In a particularly pointed segment, Booker expressed frustration with voters who opted against supporting Democratic candidates like Hillary Clinton or Kamala Harris over relatively minor policy disagreements.
“Well, you may disagree with her on 10% of her views, but you let someone get in office who you disagree with on everything,” Booker said forcefully. “You let somebody get in office who is locking up our children. You let somebody in office who’s taking away our health care. You let somebody in office who’s taken away workers rights. You let somebody in office who got rid of the Department of Education.”
The senator creatively referenced Michigan’s distinctive hand-shaped geography, calling for Democrats to transform “the Michigan hand” into “the Michigan fist” following the state’s August primary.
“I want you all to unite. I want you to punch a hole in the wall of resistance,” Booker shouted. “I want you to grab a sledgehammer and knock some stuff down. I want you to reach up and grab somebody and get them off the couch and get him on the field. We got points to put on the board.”
Booker’s remarks about voter responsibility, however, drew criticism from some progressives. Former MSNBC commentator Mehdi Hasan took issue with Booker’s framing, suggesting it wrongly places blame on voters rather than examining potential shortcomings in the Democratic platform.
“I tried to tell people who didn’t vote Dem in 2024 ‘to teach Democrats a lesson’ that sadly Democrats will never learn that lesson,” Hasan wrote on X. “Here’s Booker simply attacking and mocking people who didn’t show up to vote Dem. It’s always the voters’ fault, never the Dems or their candidates.”
The Michigan Democratic Convention represents an important organizing moment for the party as it looks toward future electoral contests. Michigan’s status as a swing state makes it a crucial battleground for both major parties, and Democratic leaders are clearly focused on building momentum and unity within their ranks.
Booker’s appearance alongside Harris and Beshear also highlights the ongoing positioning of potential Democratic standard-bearers for future elections. While the 2024 election cycle has only recently concluded, the jockeying for leadership roles within the party continues as Democrats assess their path forward.
As Booker concluded his remarks, he called for redemption of “the dream of America” through collective action: “Will you stand for our democracy? Will you stand to get out the vote? Will you stand for our children? Will you stand up for our elders? And will you stand together, unified, strong — be the hope that people need.”
