National Guard Members Shot Near White House, Sparking Bipartisan Outrage

Two West Virginia National Guard members were shot in what authorities described as an “ambush-style” attack just blocks from the White House on Wednesday afternoon. The guardsmen remain in critical condition at separate hospitals, according to FBI Director Kash Patel, who corrected earlier reports that the service members had died.

Metropolitan Police Department Executive Assistant Chief Jeffery Carroll provided details of the attack, stating that a lone gunman “came around the corner” and opened fire on the two National Guardsmen. Fellow Guard members in the vicinity reportedly heard gunshots and intervened, restraining the suspect who was also wounded in the incident. Authorities have not yet identified the shooter or clarified who fired the shot that injured the suspect.

The shooting has drawn immediate and forceful condemnation from political leaders across party lines, with particular attention from West Virginia officials whose constituents were directly affected.

President Donald Trump expressed his outrage on his Truth Social platform, writing: “The animal that shot the two National Guardsmen, with both being critically wounded, and now in two separate hospitals, is also severely wounded, but regardless, will pay a very steep price.” Trump added, “God bless our Great National Guard, and all our Military and Law Enforcement. These are truly Great People.”

West Virginia Governor Patrick Morrisey, a Republican, said he and his wife were “devastated” by the news. Both of the state’s Republican senators also offered statements of support for the wounded guardsmen and their families.

The tragedy transcended partisan divisions, with West Virginia Democratic Party Chairman Del. Mike Pushkin telling Fox News: “Tonight, our hearts are heavy for the two members of the West Virginia National Guard shot in Washington, D.C. This cowardly and tragic act of violence should never happen in this country, and our hearts grieve for the families who are dealing with this senseless tragedy.”

Pushkin emphasized the personal impact on the families involved, noting, “Two families will now have to spend Thanksgiving in agony for their loved ones, who did nothing wrong and answered their call of duty.”

National Democratic leaders also expressed solidarity with the wounded guardsmen. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer condemned the attack, while California Governor Gavin Newsom stated: “There must be zero tolerance for violence — of any kind — against the brave men and women in uniform who selflessly serve our communities and our country.” Newsom characterized the shooting as “horrific and unacceptable.”

Maryland’s Democratic Governor Wes Moore reached across the aisle, contacting Governor Morrisey and offering assistance, adding, “We condemn this violence in the strongest possible terms and we are holding the Guard, their families, and their loved ones close in our hearts.”

The shooting occurred as National Guard units have been increasingly deployed to support domestic security operations in major cities, including Washington D.C., raising concerns about the safety of service members performing such duties.

While some officials, including Newsom, made references to “political violence,” authorities have not yet confirmed any motive for the attack, and the investigation remains ongoing.

The incident adds to growing concerns about targeted attacks against uniformed personnel in the United States, coming at a time when law enforcement and military members have reported increasing threats in several regions across the country.

As the wounded guardsmen receive medical care, officials have promised a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting and the identity of the assailant.
