A Biden family Christmas photo shared on social media has sparked controversy after former President Joe Biden appeared partially obscured in the image while his son Hunter was prominently positioned in the foreground.
The photo, posted on Christmas Eve, shows several Biden family members gathered in front of a decorated Christmas tree. In the arrangement, Hunter Biden stands at the front of the group, while the former president is positioned in the back with his face partially blocked by former First Lady Jill Biden.
“Wishing you a peaceful and joyful Christmas Eve filled with joy,” Biden wrote in the accompanying message on X, formerly Twitter.
The composition quickly drew attention from social media users, with many questioning why the former president was placed in such an obscured position while his son took center stage. One commenter posted a close-up of Biden’s partially visible face with the caption, “Took me a while to find ya, champ.” Another wrote, “I think it’s disrespectful to put the eldest family member in the back of a photo taken for the former president’s social media.”
The positioning of Hunter Biden, who has been a polarizing figure throughout his father’s presidency due to his business dealings and past substance abuse issues, particularly drew scrutiny. “Hunter is the alpha now,” remarked one user, while others made more pointed comments referencing Hunter’s well-publicized struggles with addiction.
Some users shared altered versions of the image that depicted Hunter in unflattering ways, continuing a pattern of online criticism that has followed the president’s son for years. This latest incident comes after Hunter Biden was convicted of federal gun charges earlier this year, though he was later pardoned by his father before leaving office.
The Biden family has often faced intense scrutiny regarding their public appearances and family dynamics. Throughout his presidency, Joe Biden maintained strong public support for his son despite ongoing controversies, including investigations into Hunter’s foreign business dealings and tax issues.
Not all responses to the Christmas photo were critical, however. Many supporters offered warm holiday wishes to the former president and his family. “Wishing you and your family a peaceful and joyful Christmas. Your strength and love inspire us all,” wrote one commenter. Another added, “Wishing you a peaceful Christmas Eve too, Mr. President. Let’s hope the spirit of goodwill extends into the new year and helps bridge some of the divides we’ve seen.”
This Christmas marks the Bidens’ first holiday season since leaving the White House following Joe Biden’s historic decision in July to withdraw from the 2024 presidential race. The former president’s departure from public life has been relatively quiet compared to the intense scrutiny he faced during his tenure in office.
Representatives for the former president did not respond to requests for comment about the photo’s composition, and Biden himself has not addressed the online reaction.
The incident reflects the continuing challenges public figures face in the age of social media, where even casual family moments can become fodder for political commentary and criticism. Family photos of political figures have long been analyzed for symbolism and meaning, but the instantaneous and often unfiltered nature of social media has amplified both the reach and intensity of such scrutiny.

I’m not surprised this photo is stirring some controversy, given the political tensions around the Biden family. But I think it’s best to avoid jumping to conclusions and let the Bidens celebrate the holidays as they see fit.
This feels like a non-story being amplified for political reasons. The Bidens are entitled to take a family photo however they choose. Unless there’s clear evidence of something more sinister, I don’t see the value in speculating about the composition.
The photo composition does seem a bit odd, with the former president partially obscured. But I imagine there were practical considerations at play that we don’t know about. At the end of the day, it’s a private family moment they’re choosing to share.
This seems like a minor issue being blown out of proportion. Family photos don’t always have to follow rigid formulas – the important thing is that the Bidens were able to celebrate the holiday together. I’m sure there’s more meaningful news to discuss.
While the photo composition is a bit unusual, I don’t think it’s worth getting worked up over. The Bidens should be allowed to celebrate the holidays however they feel comfortable. We’d all do better to focus on more substantive matters.
Interesting how the photo composition has sparked debate. While family photos can be tricky, I think the Bidens have a right to arrange themselves as they see fit for their own Christmas photo. Curious to hear others’ perspectives on this.
